0 Safe Stoves for Darfur Refugee Mothers

Hello everyone,

On behalf of Darfur Women Network, DWN, I am excited to share with you the impact of your generous donation on the survivors of genocide in Darfur, who are living in dire conditions in refugees camp in Chad.

Our safe stoves production group consists of 10 women from the Darfur refugee camp in Chad. They agreed to make safe stoves and sell them to DWN. After the rainy season ended, they decided to resume their economic empowerment activity-making safe stoves.  From January 2023 to March 20, 2023, this group made 420 safe stoves. They sold 400 safe stoves to DWN. These women earned income, which enabled them to provide for their families. They have been economically empowered.

This group, donated 20 safe stoves to contribute to the safety of refugee mothers and girls in the camp.

Those who directly benefited from making and selling safe stoves were 60 people in addition to the house card owner who helped with transferring safe stoves from the production station to the distribution center in the camp.

Also, the DWN purchased 400 safe stoves and distributed 400 refugee families in Touloum Camp for no cost. The direct beneficiaries are 1260 mothers and girls. Receiving safe stoves has the following impact on 1260 mothers and girls :

      Reduced their trips to collect firewood from the forest by 75%. Also, it reduced the distance that women trek to collect firewood as they are able to collect smaller sticks closer to where they’re living.

      This stove reduces the serious risks of traditional stoves including smoke inhalation, burns to children, and accidental home fires. Open flames encourage respiratory issues and open fire hazards that can quickly ignite a shelter.

      Increases and restores the preservation of the ecological system in and around the camps.

      This project has helped some refugee women move from economic dependency to self-sufficiency.

      The women practice decision-making, entrepreneurship skills, and teamwork which helps them to become social change agents by changing the perception of women in the community.

      The Safe Stove is practical, culturally acceptable, and has created economic empowerment opportunities in the camp.

      This project has empowered women economically, by allowing them to get training to make safe stoves and sell them to DWN to earn income.

        On behalf of the Darfur Women Network (DWN), I would like to express my gratitude for your kind donations, which enabled us to serve the survivors of genocide in Darfur in refugee camp Touloum in Chad

On January 3rd, 2023, our Safe Stoves Production resumed production of stoves in the camp.  They walked five miles back and forth to collect ingredients and materials to make safe stoves to sell to us to earn income. This time they agreed to make 200 safe stoves. They collect the ingredients, material and water, then they mixed them. after five days, they made dough, and eventually, they are ready to make safe stoves.

I am excited to share with you the positive impact of your generous donation on women and girls, the refugees from Darfur, who are living in refugees’ camp Touloum in Chad. On March 13, 2023, the Darfur Women Network celebrated International Women’s Day with     refugee women, girls, and the community in the camp.

            During the celebration, three wonderful gifts were received during that event:

1-The safe stove production group earned income from 200 safe stoves they had made and sold to Darfur Women Network. They will help those women to provide for their families.

2-The production group donated 20 stoves to their sisters to protect them.

3- 200 Families received safe stoves for no cost to reduce their trip to collect firewood by reducing wood consumption by 75%
