Summary

This project seeks to lift 1096 families out of extreme poverty in Pichigua (520 families) and Omacha (576)Cusco, through peer learning and healthy competition. The aim is to accelerate the recovery of degraded soils and vegetation while helping the villages, and the families living in them, to manage their natural resources in a sustainable way.

Challenge

The districts of Pichigua and Omacha, have a high deterioration of natural resources. Some of the major problems facing both Pichigua and Omacha include - Water shortages - Lack of permanent pasture cultivation - Agriculture based on annual crops for self-consumption (rather than profit) - The use of wood-burning stoves without chimneys (which can eventually cause cancer from smoke inhalation) - Malnutrition caused by a poor diet

Solution

Since 2008, Pachamama Raymi has been working on environmental recovery and poverty eradication projects. The plan is to work with the families of the district on the following initiatives: - Preventative health (building family gardens with more than 5 different vegetables, maintaining the quality of the drinking water system, and building chimneys in kitchens) - Afforestation (planting 1,000 trees per family per year, sustainable grazing and pasture cultivation) - Sustainable business

Long-Term Impact

In the long term, thanks to afforestation, the district will benefit from fertile soils. The lack of soil erosion will allow water to infiltrate the land, thus, producing grasslands and re-emerging agriculture. In addition, families will have access to timber trees which they can sell as part of a sustainable business. These results will greatly benefit the financial wellbeing of these families and will lead to overall prosperity which is the goal of Pachamama Raymi.
