Exciting news!
The Zoo is looking to the future and seeking a donor to sponsor the upgrade of the Israeli Center for Raptor Egg Incubation.
There is an urgent need to increase the birth rate of these birds of prey and the establishment of a more advanced aviary and breeding center is the next step required to facilitate this project’s success.
The existing incubation center and hatchery is open to observation by visitors, but tends to be a more passive experience restricted to viewing eggs in incubators. In contrast, a walk-through aviary is a very unique experience because visitors are able to view the animals at very close proximity in natural surroundings and without barriers.
The aviary will be populated by adult birds brought to the Zoo because of injury or illness. Visitors will be able to observe the birds in flight, nesting and caring for their young. This intimate experience will serve as a powerful educational tool, supported by signage and other materials and activities (for example, guided tours and ecological workshops).
The main goal of the aviary and breeding center is to produce as many chicks as possible for reintroduction into the wild.
In addition, the aviary and breeding center will support the Zoo’s efforts to promote public awareness of the plight of birds of prey in Israel, encourage wildlife conservation efforts, support and expand the existing captive breeding and reintroduction program, and serve as a base for professional research.
The aviary and breeding center will be approximately 4,000 square meters in size (including the height dimension in order to provide the birds with ample room to fly), covering an area of approximately 4000 sq. meters (one acre).
Situated on the main route through the Zoo and near other popular attractions, this exhibit is sure to be a major draw for visitors.
