Helping the pollinators
By Douglas McMeekin | Executive Director, Yachana Foundation
The year is moving forward with a lot of positive projects in the works. Our work with native Amazon Melipona stingless bees is also growing. The population of insect pollinators within the Amazon is dropping rapidly due to deforestation. Our program where people can adopt a beehive is expanding and will help to offset the destruction to the environment. This is a project that is primarily aimed to help women by improving their income by their having more beehives where they can sell the byproducts. The project is also vitally important in helping to protect the rainforest. Farmers are putting the beehives in plantations of their coffee to help pollinate the trees and increase coffee production and income for the family but those same bees are also pollinating the surrounding rainforest. This is a wonderful and simple project helping the people and the environment. Thank you for your support to make this project possible.

Progress in protecting the Rainforest
By Douglas McMeekin | Executive Director
Environmental education is a key component of what we as an institution are working on. Joining with other organizations we are putting together a program for specialists to visit schools and talk about the importance of protecting the forest and wildlife that lives in it. One of the organizations we are working with is liberating wild animals that have gone through their facility to make sure they are in good health and ready to go back to the wild. They are turning these animals loose in our 1,000 hectares (2,500 acres) of rainforest. It is vitally important that we promote a program of conservation in the region to provide some protection to these animals being liberated. Also the promotion of the management of Melipona bees. These native bees to the Amazon are stingless and vitally important for the pollination of many species of plants in the region. We are promoting where someone can adopt a beehive and we will send videos of the hive and how this project is helping women in the region. These programs and much more are where your support is going. Thanks, have a happy holiday season, and remember, I love you Douglas

Yachana Rainforest and health programs
By Douglas McMeekin | Executive Director, Yachana Foundation
We have been busy these past few months. It is interesting how the three projects that we have on GlobalGiving, are all in some way or another related. Protecting the rainforest, the forest environment is a healthy place for elderly to take hikes or other activities. The forest is also healing. The organic and permaculture farming we are doing provides healthy food and teaches better, more sustainable methods of farming. Protecting the Melipona bees, with our now having over 50 hives, is providing pollinators for all the plants, not only food. Our medical clinic, laboratory and investigation into tropical diseases will be world class. The construction is almost finished and the equipment and supplies will get here from the USA in around two months. As part of the investigation, we are facilitating a 20 month nutritional study of the local population starting in September. There is just so much going on. You need to come and see it personally! Thanks for your wonderful support and please keep helping with as much as you can. Thanks, and remember, I love you Douglas
