Tackling Holiday Hunger with The Food Bus

By Georgia Wright | Media and Comms Manager

School holidays are a difficult time for families already under financial pressure, so we’ve been busy making as many children as possible in can be well fed and have some fun over the holidays! Alongside our weekly Food Bus stops, we continued to run our school holiday Kids Clubs through HAF, giving children and families access to healthy food, creativity and connection during the holidays.

In February, we welcomed 25 children, and in April, 38 children joined us. Across these sessions, children took part in cooking workshops, flower planting, crafts and food education. These are joyful, hands-on sessions, but they are also about something bigger: helping children build confidence around food, try new ingredients, and enjoy positive experiences around eating and cooking.

Across the year, our children’s cooking workshops reached families who rely on free school meals, combining healthy meals with creative activities and giving children the chance to learn, play and eat well in a safe and welcoming space. Parents consistently told us how much these sessions meant to them. One parent shared, “My daughter doesn’t eat tomatoes at home, but she was more than willing to try them in her food, and she really enjoyed eating them.”

Our Kids Clubs are about making sure school holidays are still full of nourishment, joy and connection. They give children a chance to learn new skills, spend time with others, and enjoy healthy food in an environment that feels fun, safe and welcoming.

Thank You and How You Can Help

Thank you for helping us make the school holidays brighter for children and families across South London.

Your donations help us provide healthy meals, fun activities and food education during the school holidays. They help us create spaces where children can cook, learn, play and try new things, and where families can feel supported during some of the hardest times of the year.

If you are able to donate, share our project, or tell others about our work, it would make a real difference.

Thank you for standing with us and helping ensure that school holidays do not become a time of hunger.

All our gratitude
