Since the start of the new financial year for The Butterfly Tree I am pleased to report that we are reaching out to new rural areas in need of support. We have drilled two more boreholes (wells) for remote schools, one at Malombe in Nyawa and the most recent at Katubya in Musokotwane where previously pupils were drawing water from shallow wells as the nearest borehole was 10km from the school. Now hundreds more children have access to safe drinking water.
August is winter time in Zambia and no rain has fallen since April. Consequently, food becomes in short supply. Last month The Butterfly tree donated 200 x 25kg bags of ground maize to orphans and vulnerable children, and 40 bags to the elderly in Mukuni Village. Many of them lost their children due to the HIV and AIDS pandemic, do not have a source of income and rely on hand-outs from neighbours.
To overcome these challenges the charity initiates sustainable income-generating enterprises for rural women. The Sekute chicken and vegetables project is proving to be lucrative. Having found an outlet over the border in Botswana the women sell their vegetables to hotels and lodges as it is a prime tourist area. Every three months the women donate some of their profits to elderly and disabled people within their community.
A new project is being developed at Musokotwane. During the mango season women make and sell mango juice and jam. As there is only one season in Zambia, women are being given seeds and fertilzer to grow vegetables to earn extra income. They have a ready-made market, to supply the tourism industry, in Livingstone the capitol of torusim.
Thanks to our generous donors more children are able to drink safe water. Women who so often are head of households can feed their families and educate their children.
