After six months without rain the communities are looking forward to the rainy season which starts in November. now is the time to prepare the land for planting which traditionally is done in December. This past year we have beena ble to donate several boreholes and solar-powered water reticulation symptoms which give schools and communities access to water all year.
Our Annual Report for 2021-22, which includes the accounts, images and graphs, has just been published and can be viewed using this link: https://www.thebutterflytree.org.uk/pages/2022/the-butterfly-tree-annual-report-and-accounts-2021-2022/
Boreholes were installed for the following schools and communities:
A third project for women is progressing well in Sekute. The aim of the project is to provide a sustainable income-generating enterprise for 200 women. In addition to a water system The Butterfly Tree constructed a workshop with an office, toilets, a chicken coop, and a building to house a grinding (hammer) mill. This is proving to be invaluable as the women had to travel 6 miles to the nearest facility. Now they can freely grind maize for their own consumption and charge people outside the community to earn additional income.
The women are growing rape (a nutritious vegetable) and identified that there is high demand for this vegetable across the border in Botswana where it cannot be grown due to the rocky terrain. They are also rearing chickens and from the first batch of 200 they made good profits.
There is a need for more boreholes in schools and seeds for sustainable school gardens. We cover a radius of 250miles from our base and most of these schools are remote. A bag of seeds cost just $15.
Every donation, no matter how small, counts and is greatly appreciated. Whether it be from individuals, corporate, schools, clubs, or from grant aid awards, every donation goes directly into our vital grass root projects in Zambia. The Butterfly Tree is the biggest contributor to education in the Kazungula District, enabling more children access to basic and secondary education,
We are extremely grateful to all our supporters around the world for helping to make 2021-22 such a successful and rewarding year!
A special thanks to our major donors. During this period their donations have funded the construction of classrooms, teacher’s and medical staff houses, health posts, borehole installation, orphan sponsorship, women’s and girls’ projects, and malaria and HIV prevention programmes.
