Despite all the challenges 2021 was an extremely good year for The Butterfly Tree and the rural communities we support in Zambia. More children have access to safe water, bags of maize were regularly donated to those most in need, during the dry season, and more women are given opportunities to earn a sustainable income.
Late last year we were delighted to receive a substantial grant award for our water projects in Zambia. The amount we received will fund the installation of seven boreholes and handpumps. Two boreholes have already been installed, one for Nampaka community and the other for Nziso school, both in remote areas of Nayawa Chiefdom. Having access to safe water will help to reduce diarrhoeal diseases and shorten the time spent collecting water from rivers and streams. Drilling for the remaining five boreholes will take place after the rains.
The rains this season started late which can be a problem if crops are sown too early. We donated seeds and fertilizer to sixteen schools to support their sustainable feeding programmes, planting took place in January and so far, the rains have been abundant. Pupils who walk long distances to school benefit the most from daily feeding programmes and for some this maybe their only meal of the day.
The mango project for 200 women is progressing well. After the workshop and storeroom were completed the women are currently receiving training on how to make mango jam, juice, and tea and how best to dry mangoes. In Zambia there is only one season for mangoes and due to the abundance of fruit sadly some is left to rot. Now the women know how to preserve mangoes, they will have a constant source of nutrition for their families as well as an income-generating activity to provide funds to pay for the education of their children.
Our aim for 2022 is to install more boreholes and solar-powered water reticulation systems in schools.
