In our last update we announced that we were really excited for the reopening of HDS. HDS opened a little late due to Covid-19 and unfortunately not too long after HDS reopened, we had to close again between October 17th and October 29th. Sadly, Mae Sai district is now in the red area for the Covid-19 pandemic. Thai laborers who went to work in Thachilek, Myanmar returned with the Covid-19 virus and the numbers of those infected continued to increase. Some of the laborers illegally crossed the border and didn’t go through state required quarantine. This has led to Mae Sai district being elevated to a red area and thus the closing of HDS. The government and soldiers are working to control the border for protection and prevention of further spread. For the safety and wellbeing of students and staff it’s important that HDS adheres to precautionary measures.
Before HDS closed though, DEPDC celebrated its 30 year anniversary! The celebration was opened by the deputy interior minister. Many local people as well as people from the town of Chiang Rai came to join in the wondrous occasion. All the students helped to prepare the center for the celebration. The students trained for a Tai dance performance and former sons and daughters of DEPDC provided a lot of support for the activities and celebrations. DEPDC’s former sons and daughters donated food, drinks, snacks, and worked to raise funds for DEPDC. The day was full of joy and was a beautiful reminder that the mission of DEPDC and HDS is just as important today as it was 30 years ago. It was incredibly special to see 30 years of students, staff, volunteers, and community members come together in the name of human trafficking prevention and it definitely gave us hope for the next 30 years!
To all our past, present, and future donors we would like to thank you for your continued support in keeping this program open. Education is at the core of DEPDC’s mission to prevent the trafficking of vulnerable youth and thanks to your donations we are able to do just that.
