The slight dip in temperatures and thickening air foreshadows the coming rains, and marks the passing of another 3 months at DEPDC. Since we last checked in, the Half Day School has wrapped up another successful year. Through GlobalGiving and your generous contributions we are now gearing up to greet 45 at-risk children on the first day of school. Before we charge off into another year bursting with activities and stories, let’s take a look at what we’ve done these past 3 months.
A Visit from Ngee Ann Polytechnic,
Coinciding with the end of the school year in March, we received a visit from 22 students and 2 teachers from Ngee Ann Polytechnic in Singapore. Singapore students and DEPDC Youth Leaders worked together to provide English, math, and life skills lessons to the younger children. Our fifteen youths (both SYSTERM graduates and HDS students) gracefully fulfilled the roles of leaders and ambassadors for our organization and their home. Their success this week is a testament to their growth here at DEPDC, from the bashful children who first entered our gates, to the confident, strong young adults we see today. No trip is complete without Khun “Papa” Sompop. He met with students from both organizations, providing insight into the founding of the organization, his words inspiring children to work towards a better future.
Growth Through Dialogue
On April 1st, individuals traveled from throughout Thailand and Myanmar to convene at DEPDC for a Consultation Workshop hosted by Thailand Research Fund and Chulalongkorn University. It was a joyous reunion for staff, as graduate MYN and SYSTERM students returned to their alma mater. Students and staff gathered to listen to scholars from Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok present their findings on a recent case study that analyzed the Thai-Myanmar border collaboration. The two countries are working together to prevent migrant children from falling victim to human trafficking. The study was carried out with the intent of creating a standard protocol for aid and government workers along the border. A total of 32 DEPDC alumni came to share their experiences and provide valuable input.
A huge thank you!
The teachers, students, and staff at DEPDC would like to extend our gratitude for the support of our mission. Your generous support enables us to open our doors to the spirited children that scamper throughout our hallways. Everyday they race into our school rooms we further our goal of eliminating human-trafficking. Without people like you we could not continue to function as a community-centred organization, operating in the regions that need us the most
