CW school creator and administrator, Ruth, has a number of talented friends in Cusco. Her brother Edgard teaches a group of our parents how to start and run a simple small business and actually make money. The primary cause of the serious family dysfunction is due to the extreme poverty the families live in and lack the skills for even a slight improvement. Small cottage type business can ease the situation and motivate the parents to try something within their reach. Edgard has captured their interest and there is a spark of hope in the room.

CW Girls are learning skills for life and their parents have noticed

All CW girls are learning skills, like how to bake cakes and cookies to sell when they need money for public high school supplies after they graduate from CW school. The constant fees required cause incredible stress for the alumnae who want to stay in school. We also teach about money management to the girls and the parents thanks to the generosity of our accountant, Shanda, who teaches them how to make a budget, record expenses and income to determine if they are earning money. The baking teacher, Yolanda, teaches CW girls and their parents, excited to learn after tasting their daughters baked goods, and help ease their financial stress. These items are not available in their rural community and they have no ovens to in which to bake. CW will help provide a solution to their great need to earn money. The community is growing closer and tighter by learning how to support each other.

Classes are after school or on weekends at the school and the positive results are showing up in our more relaxed and happy girls and improved family relationships. These skills will serve both girls and parents over their lifetime.

The crisis that appeared last year, when 46 CW alumnae girls struggling to stay in high school flooded their primary school Administration with a pleas for help, sparking the engine that created these programs.

Meanwhile, Dr Alejandro (our psychologist) continues his work with the girls and their parents to stop the aggressive and violent domestic problems in the home with noted improvement. Parents have opened up to him and are now understanding that they can change and the family can heal. Their daughters can attend high school and still help the family in small ways, like baking and selling cakes. The is a WIN WIN for all.

"The experience of working with our former students teaches us that when leaving CW school and entering public high school, students have fees. To say that public education in Peru is free, is not true; students must make payments to enroll, for the acquisition of a uniform, entry exam fees and educational materials. With the difficult economic situation their parents face, they cannot afford these expenses."

"It is why we made the decision to teach our girls from 1st grade on, pastry baking (cookies and cakes), a 'productive and practical skill' they can learn and can put into play to build their journey through high school and life. A 'know-how' that is built throughout her school career and is very different from her experience of being a student at the primary level. They will not require a large budget or a location (CW school provides the oven), but will provide students the possibility to earn money to support their ongoing studies."

**NOTICE**

Donations in general are seriously down and that loss is hurting our school program. We know you believe in education for girls and hope you will make a monthly donation. A generous donor just informed us they cannot continue to fund their commitment of $65,000 a year, toward our annual budget of $153,000 leaving us in a panic. I am putting out a plea to all who value what we do for 123 girls every day to please support our operating budget until the new self-sufficiency program is operational (about 3 years) and your donations will not be needed. We are so close to being completely operated and funded in Peru. This was a surprise and a sign of the times we live in now. Due to the sudden loss of this donation we are fearful we might have to close down needed programs like the meal and psychology and both are absolutely necessary and to eliminate some of our dedicated teachers is unthinkable. Meet Maria Isabel our student profiled this month

CW School helps Girls recognize their many talents and abilities...

Meet Maria Isabel C. the CW highlighted student for this month.

All CW teachers are fully engaged with delivering quality education and age-related empowerment tools for the girls in their grades, but also they expand their attention to the overall student body to enforce by example. Alejandro, our psychologist provides group and one to one sessions to identifying special needs and how to address them to help all of our girls grow in their abilities.
Here is another story I promised you this quarter of another student as told by her teacher.

MARIA ISABEL C. -- By Giovanna C. – 6th grade teacher

“Maria Isabel is a sweet girl who came to the CW school in March 2013. She was a quiet shy little girl, but when doing learning activities she always showed her ability and competitiveness."
"During her first years it did not take her long to make friends, thanks to her way of being The people around her knew her noble heart and this is due to the person who knew how to raise her, her beloved mom, Mrs. Berta C."

"Berta C. is a lady full of good virtues, very cheerful and above all enthusiastic, but with scarce economic resources. She is the only breadwinner of her family as a single mother. She was able to face her motherly responsibility with great care and courage, for her it was not an impediment to have a daughter, on the contrary she showed with her actions that being a single mother is not a problem, but a blessing."

"Recognizing the need, Berta looks for ways to get income for her home, so that she does not neglect her little one. She made the decision to go out to the streets with a box that carries the creams and brushes to shine shoes and until now she continues this doing with a lot of pride."

"Maria responds to the sacrifice of her mother by studying hard and occupying consecutively the first place during her five years at CW and this year is no exception. Maria has been striving and dedicating herself so she can receive the honor of first place this year as well."

"Maria’s changes with respect to her shyness are noticed, and proof of this was seen last year she ran as a candidate for the School Mayor, "Elections 2018" and won. Today she is the new School Mayor of our beloved institution. Today she is a very happy and active girl. She showed her many talents also in song and dance, she is very versatile and especially she is happy because in the CW School family she found the security and confidence that she needed to become the girl that she is today."

"Our work in the 6th grade classroom is based on strengthening their knowledge, but we primarily empower them and train them as women leaders so that they can face any situation that life presents them with and carry the name of CHICUCHAS WASI on high."

"Unfortunately this is the last year for Maria in our academic institution and we know that she has great potential. She knows that "CHICUCHAS WASI" watches over her alumnae students in our Alumnae program and will not forget her.”

How Do You Say “Love” in Quechua?

"Chicuchas Wasi is a place defined by love. Love is the first and last consideration of everything they do, and it is so palpable that even a stranger like me, entering for the first time, could feel it. Upon entering this school for Quechua girls outside of Cusco, Peru, all the girls were in groups around the courtyard ready to perform, and all eyes were on me. This isn’t the usual way shy Peruvian girls might act – they were proud of their costumes and preparation for their performance, and they were confident and eager to show what they knew. Each of them wanted to talk with me, and I wished I could have duplicated myself to connect with every one of them!

The teachers and school director, who also function as social workers, visit with the community and families to find the girls who are most in need. These are teachers who know what is going on in each student’s home because they do the visits themselves. They bring the parents to the school for parenting education and engage the parents in the activities of the school. When girls graduate, they bring them back to the school to ensure they have what they need, but also to give a forum for the girls, still considered at-risk, to express their feelings about their lives.

I received a tour of the school and an incredible presentation of the Incan Winter Solstice ceremony. Each girl made her own costume, learned songs, dances, chants, and scripts for this event. It was an unforgettable spectacle showcasing the leadership of the older girls and the potential of the younger girls.

Afterwards, I shared lunch with a group of 3^rd graders and enjoyed the freshly made Aji de Gallina (creamy chicken stew) with them. Being 3^rdgraders, they giggled and told jokes all through the meal, but still finished every last bite. Nutrition is a major factor affecting their health and, therefore, the ability to move out of poverty for these families. It was great to see the quality of food prepared for the girls. I had Aji de Gallina the night before in a restaurant and the Chicuchas Wasi preparation wins!

There are 126 girls at a time at Chicuchas Wasi and it was clear after speaking with the students, the teachers, and some parents that it is a life-changing experience for the girls and their families. I think I left my heart there..."

Not all our girls enroll with the same readiness

Teachers and CW Psychologist celebrate CW girls

Not all our girls enroll with the same preparedness for education...

Here is an image that depicts our teachers and psychologist joyfully celebrating with the entire school last December. What an exceptional team we have as you will see in some of the stories I will post in the upcoming monthly updates.

Most girls who enroll each March are eager to go to school and are prepared to some extent with basic social experience and manners. However, we also receive girls that need our special attention to be able to develop a quality life integrated into society and not be lost forever to isolation. In this issue I will translate the story of one of these girls as told by her teacher.

"María V. arrived at our CW educational institution accompanied by her mother in 2017, in hopes of a vacancy. According to the report from the mother, no public school would accept her because of her 'condition' and she was two years behind then. Since no other school accepted her in the Peruvian Education Ministry system, Maria V. was accepted by CW School (free of cost) for first grade in 2017 at 8 years of age, to avoid losing another year of study. The Mother's condition of health was delicate due to a brain tumor and was sent to Lima to be treated and for this reason Maria lost two years of study. Thank God her mother now is receiving treatment."

"María came to Chicuchas Wasi in a situation of complete moral abandonment; she had aggressive and intolerant behavior with her peers, she was given a psychological learning evaluation that showed a "moderate" intellectual deficit."

"For 2018 and constant requests, she was promoted to second grade over a period of time. Maria worked on her behavior and improved her character with her classmates. Today Maria is a girl who is very dear to her classmates and she is part of the group. All the difficulties that she presented with are changed, she is different; she is very communicative, she shares many things with her companions, she helps her companions, she lends her supplies to the compañeras who forget to bring hers, and she is a collaborator in the groups. María likes to sing, dance and tell stories and she likes to dress up as a princess and she enjoys those moments in school."
