Summary

The Atlantic Rainforest is endangered, with only at 12% forest cover left. Its importance is critical as the source of fresh water for 70% of the Brazilian population, and as one of the 6 biodiversity hotspots of the world. Intense cattle ranching and urban development are putting extreme pressure on the forest and its resources. SINAL is working to protect and restore degraded areas of the forest, particularly hilltops and freshwater springs. With your help, we can bring back the rainforest!

Challenge

There is extreme pressure on the Atlantic Rainforest due to unsustainable cattle raising practices in the region, as well as uncontrolled urban sprawl. Land degradation in the area has been associated with deadly landslides locally. Additionally, 125 million people benefit from this source of fresh water.

Solution

SINAL operates reforesting and protecting springs in 200 hectares in the critical buffer zone between some of the last remaining conservation units of the Atlantic Rainforest, and the growing periphery of Rio de Janeiro. Our reforestation project brings back native trees, restores freshwater springs and sustainable food chains.

Long-Term Impact

Through our work in our own property and with our partners including local conservation units, we are: Restoring and protecting the endangered Atlantic Rainforest Ensuring water security for local communities Protecting and bringing back local biodiversity Preventing degradation-related natural disasters such as landslides
