Educate an Orphan in Rural Western Kenya

Tumaini Miles of Smiles has perceived education as one of the most powerful tools in poverty eradication efforts. Over the years, our educational initiatives have illuminated the path for hundreds of children, breaking the chains of poverty and paving the way for brighter futures. Every lesson learned, every achievement unlocked, is a step towards a world where every child has the opportunity to thrive. From classrooms to dreams, we are building a brighter tomorrow.

Last year’s high school final exams were released early this year, and more than half of the students passed their exams. We had a total of thirty-five students in different schools, twenty-three (23) have been admitted to different universities in the country, twelve (10) have already joined different colleges and two are yet to decide what to do next. This means 98% of our students completed high school and are now specializing.

This happens because of your efforts and commitment to supporting vulnerable children and families. Your support means a lot to these children and their families. The more children we support the more the poverty cycle is broken, and it is happening!

We have sixty-two high school students in our sponsorship program and they are doing very well. We had a successful meeting with all the students during the school holidays. Out of 62 students, only 3 scored D+ and all the rest had C+ and above. All the students received pocket money for their upkeep and personal effects.

Again this is happening because of your generosity. Your support enables these students to stay in their respective schools without being sent home for fees. They are also provided with personal effects to make them comfortable in school. Their siblings and their guardians/parents have enough food to sustain themselves because they are provided with farm inputs through our strengthening family program.

Your sponsorship is not only supporting an individual child but a family. Once again thank you so much for your generosity.

Our challenge is that most of our children have no sponsors. We have over 100 new pupils in our primary school who have no sponsors and not all the students in high school have sponsors. It is our humble request that you consider sharing the good work you are doing with your friends and family so that may build our number to help us reach out to these children who need support. We can make it happen as we touch one life at a time.

What an a chievement!

Education brings light not only in the lives of children but in families and communities respectively. The good news is that most of the vulnerable families who never thought that they would have their children in school, their children are joining universities this year!

Thirty students completed their high school and they have all qualified to join different universities and colleges. More than five students scored As and the least scored a C. This is happening because of the good foundation and hope you gave them while in primary school.

Our last eighth grade class had a population of 3 students and they have all joined high school. Our best score was 420 marks out of 500 and least mark was 280 marks out of 500. This girl who scored 280 was rescued from the street after the uncles bused her, she lost both parents. She came to us and joined grade six, her education foundation was not good but our teachers tried their best to help and we are glad she managed to score more than the average mark.

We have started a new year and we have more than 30 new orphans who have been admitted in school. These children need sponsors to be able to continue with their education and have their basic needs met. We are helping these children as they live with guardians/parents because children are better in the families and communities. Therefor we are not supporting only one child but a family. A part from the education we provide farm inputs to improve their farming so that they can enough food throughout the year.

When you sponsor a child you are actually not only sponsoring one child but you are impacting their siblings’ lives as well. We are grateful for your commitment, prayers and support. We will be happy if you will consider sharing this wonderful work you are doing with family and friends.

End of year Exams!

Good news! One of our students , Mercy Bakhoya, has just graduated in law! We call her the first Tumaini lawyer!

We are happy to report that this year has been different from the last three years of covid. It has been a big relief for school to get back to the normal academic year and we are now ready to start our National exams in both primary and high schools. Our long holidays start in the next two weeks as the 6^th, 8^th grade and form four students start their exams.

We have come to an end of our previous 8-4-4 system and the current 8^th grade class will be the last from the previous system. We will no longer have 8^th grade national exams instead we will have 6^th grade assessment and the students will join junior school for three years and then senior secondary for another three years.

In today’s time, education has become a challenging task for poor children. Things are tightening up and it becomes hard for children to get quality education. Many children are suffering out there and we are grateful for your generosity, the few students we are supporting can access quality education.

One question which is often raised about poverty is -’why those who are poor continue to stay poor?’ Now, the direct answer to this question may be through the concept which is known as the vicious circle of poverty. Once caught up here, the way out seems rather impossible. The thing about being poor or rather not being able to afford the basic of the amenities is, inability to find ways to get out of your present situation. Now, education happens to be one of the ways-potentially feasible for moving out of poverty.

The number of children from poor backgrounds is high and it is sad to see what is happening in the lives of those children. What you are doing in the lives of the few children we have is amazing. We are seeing a big difference in the lives of these children and they are doing well in their studies. One hundred percent of our children get to join high school, and we are always happy to see them progress. You are making great things happen not only in the children’s lives but in their families and the entire community.

We need more supporters for the children we admitted this year. We have more than 70 pupils without sponsors. Kindly share with friends and family members about the great work you are doing and let them join us in making a difference in the lives of vulnerable children.
