Co-curricular activities

By Memory Mundia | Project Coordinator

Edward is one of the sponsored children doing his grade 10 at St. Rapheals Secondary School. When he finishes school Edward wants to become a Doctor. During the second term he joined JETS (Junior Engineers, Technicians and Scientists) and participated in the Livingstone District JETS fair where all 83 plus schools participated and he scooped the 3rd position. Besides the 9 subjects that the pupils take in class there are also other co-curricular activities that a pupil can take part. The Co-curricular activities give the student an opportunity to develop particular skills and exhibit their non-academic abilities. They actually complement the curricular activities and groom the students in the “Art of living and working together”. They are the true and practical experiences gained by students by their own learnings. A Chinese proverb very aptly states, “Teach me, and I will forget. Show me, and I might remember. Involve me, and I will never forget” It also professes coordination, adjustment and speech fluency, extempore and debating skills amongst students. It teaches the students to stand up for their rights. Co-curricular activities render a number of values like: Educational value, Psychological Values, Development of civic values, Physical Development values, Recreational values, Cultural Values, Improved Academic performance, Strengthened Self Confidence, Sense of responsibility and Greater opportunities The story is the same Edward his life has been different since he joined JETS club and this has motivated him more to work hard in sciences and pursue his career in medicine.
