Real life projects through STEM

By Tad Kincaid | Executive Director

Over the course of the school year, Kidspire will typically facilitate 10 STEM Days. These are special days of STEM activities, where we bring participating students outside the orphanage to visit the Kidspire makerspace in HCMC. It allows us an opportunity to set up STEM stations, where each station includes a focused topic, facilitated by one of the Kidspire STEM teachers. On November 22, we facilitated a STEM Day for students from 2 different orphanages.

The theme of the day was natural disasters. Sadly, Vietnam has experienced quite a few natural disasters in recent months, featuring typhoon winds, flooding, and landslides. The impact on coastal communities has been significant. But from a learning opportunity perspective, these disasters have provided us with an opportunity for students to brainstorm and design solutions that can save lives. Over the course of this November STEM Day, students created survival chambers, soil erosion prevention, and stablilizing structures for homes, among other ideations.

We love how STEM provides youth with opportunities for real-life problem solving, and the chance to build prototypes.

Thank you for helping us to bring these learning opportunities to these children.

Sincerely,

Tad
