Steps to Recovery: Supporting Syrian Amputees

Abdel, a father of two and a displaced young man in his thirties from rural Aleppo, has lived with the consequences of war for nearly a decade. He lost his right leg below the knee in an airstrike that targeted a local market in his hometown. The trauma left deep emotional scars, driving him into isolation and eroding his trust in those around him.

Recently, Abdel visited our NSPPL center in Afrin, where his case was carefully evaluated by our specialists. Thanks to your ongoing support, we were able to design, fabricate, and fit a custom below-the-knee prosthesis tailored to his needs. After undergoing physical rehabilitation and gait training, Abdel has now regained his mobility and, with it, a sense of independence and confidence.

He is currently working toward securing employment to provide for his family—something he once thought impossible. Your contributions have helped restore not just a limb, but also a future full of hope and self-reliance for Abdel and his children.

Abbas, a courageous individual who suffered a left-side hip-level amputation due to the devastating earthquake that struck Syria and Turkey, recently visited our NSPPL center. His condition left him completely dependent and unable to move freely. Thanks to your continued contributions, our skilled team of prosthetic technicians and physical therapists were able to craft and fit a custom hip-disarticulation prosthesis for Abbas—one of the most complex types of artificial limbs we provide.

Following weeks of rehabilitation and training, Abbas is now walking independently. More importantly, he is regaining his autonomy and is now able to pursue employment opportunities to support himself and his family. In his words, the services he received have given him a new lease on life.
