Dear supporters,
Since the start of 2025, we have been given the opportunity to provide more diversity and inclusion workshops than ever before!
Thanks to the support of the Kyoto University Gender Equality Promotion Center, we were able to host a workshop at the childcare facility "Kyoto University Kid's Community (KuSuKU). The elementary school students really surprised me with their determination to speak English as much as possible, and it was a great opportunity for native speaking participants to support those who were struggling.
We have also been continuing our work at a local elementary school. Our "story time with discussion" is held monthly, and although only for twenty minutes per session, the students are engaged and ask many follow-up questions. I hope that these short sessions spark curiosity in children and lead them to think more about DEI in their daily lives.
We were also able to provide a workshop specifically addressing Japanese sign language, and how in fact it is a language. Students were able to see native English, French and Japanese speakers unable to communicate with each other, however with the introduction of sign language, language barriers were reduced and despite not knowing sign language, gestures made communication possible. Children were able to learn simple signs, and matching phrases in both English and French. It was a wonderful experience for us all to learn how those who use sign language struggle in their daily lives, but how with small effort from their peers, conversations can take place and allow them to communicate with hearing individuals.
As always, we appreciate your continued support and are very much looking forward to updating you in the next quarter!
