Putting Smiles on Pupils' Faces

Warmest greetings from Mwiyenga Primary School! We so appreciate your Love, Compassion, Kindness, Generosity, Empathy and true Love for humanity. VPIA is a wonderful association that is putting smiles on pupils' faces. We are deeply grateful for what VPIA and its donors have contributed to our physical, emotional and financial support. We are happy to report the following:

Water is now in plenty
School uniforms and fees for the pupils entering school are more readily available
Teachers have become more sensitive, generous, empathetic, kind and loving
There is no use of a cane in the school
High performance has become our norm
We are now one large united family of teachers, parents, and pupils
Due to our good performance, well-wishers came forward who have built 4 new classrooms
Many more students have gone on to attend high school due to teacher support from our benevolent kitty

We have joined compassionate support groups where we support one another. At our gatherings, we share about the Five Strategies of The Virtues Project. We move from place to place spreading Virtues to different parts of Kakamega County, from Bukura, Mumias, Butere, Vihiga, Siaya, and the list goes on. These groups were started by another virtue program here, Virtues and Community Development for Kenya, following Virtues training. Kudos to Virtues programs!

We continue to enrich ourselves by meeting every Tuesday in our Virtues Club where we share experiences and take learners through the Five Strategies. During meetings, and on Mondays, we do a Virtues Pick where we choose a virtue that is to be practiced by both teachers and pupils. This has made our school a very child-friendly school.

We appreciate your kindness and generosity that helps boost our benevolent kitty, supports tuition and uniform costs and funds small projects so that we can continue to put smiles on our pupils' faces. You make a difference!

Primary School Expansion, Students Excelling

Mwiyenga Primary School New Building

Mwiyenga Primary School staff want to offer our sincere gratitude and appreciation for the love, generosity, compassion, kindness and continued support you have accorded us. You have been a blessing to the school and the entire community. We now have a smooth-running school without interruption as it was earlier when pupils had to go for water and come back late. The water challenges are over and pupils have enough time to learn without disruption. Due to this, our performance keeps on improving and thus we are attracting purposeful people to help the school. Our school had been neglected due to poor performance. As I write to you now, four new classrooms have been built, two for kindergarten and two for the senior pupils.

We are now seen as being a child-friendly school with good performance which we feel is being achieved through the practice of the Five Strategies of The Virtues Project. Our boys and girls that have graduated from our primary school have continued to show their prowess in academics with continued commitment and purposefulness that they practiced and honed in primary school. One of our foster children emerged second out of 133 students at Kilimo Secondary School and gave a speech on coping with adolescence by practicing assertiveness, self-control, and respect.

With your support, we were able to build structures to raise rabbits and chickens at the school and this has really boosted our benevolent kitty which helps feed and provides uniforms for the orphans. This year several orphans sat for their exams. Our worry is how to help them pay tuition for secondary school. We, therefore, ask for your continued financial support so that we can help them go on to secondary school and brighter futures. Secondary school education costs 33,000 shillings for a county school up to 56,000 shillings for a national school (approximately $330.00-560.00 USD). Primary school is 8,000 shillings per year ($80.00 USD). Uniforms are 10,000 shillings for secondary and 1,000 shillings for primary school students ($100 and $10.00 respectively).

I frequently visit Kilimo Girls School to offer guidance and counseling since our school is a role model. There have been no early pregnancies for the last five years which is due to the practice of Virtues. We do a Virtues Pick every day in classes for the Virtues of the Day and every Monday on the assembly for the Virtue of the Week. Virtues club members continue meeting and sharing experiences and encouraging each other on Tuesdays.

We continue to support one another in our community through a compassionate support game and on November 23rd we are going to neighboring Vihiga community to support them.

Please help us continue to grow our benevolent kitty so that we can keep putting smiles on our orphan's faces by providing meals, school supplies and education. Thank you all for your consideration of our requests, your kindness and compassion, and above all, your generosity and love. May you be blessed abundantly and may we all continue spreading virtues far and wide.

Our school has become a model!

Hi dear friend, I'm sorry for not replying on time, I have been down with Malaria.

We at Mwiyenga primary school are still embracing The five strategies of virtues through the virtues pick during staff meetings and every Monday for the Virtue of the Week. Both teachers and pupils are practising the five strategies. The benevolent kitty has helped the less fortunate and needy pupils through the famine period and has made it possible for them to stay in school. We have planted a kitchen garden that has helped us sell vegetables to the community so as to raise an extra coin that has enabled us assist the orphans without any worry. Our poultry project has also supported us care for the orphans in high schools.

We have engaged ourselves fully in the Virtues compassionate support game, with other Virtues groups headed by Madam Bibiana. So far the groups have really grown from two to nine. The frequent meetings and sharing has seen us grow both economically and psychologically. On 29th of June all the groups met at Mwiyenga primary school to support us; we are in process of starting a Rabbit project for the orphans in the school.

Teachers and pupils meet every Tuesday at 3.00pm. Kenyan time where we go through a Virtues strategy every week. We share stories showing the practice of the strategy among both teachers and pupils. This has made us united and one. We have got a new Headteacher and soon she will take a Virtues training. We have taken her through partially and she is very anxious to get the full training. She is impressed with unity and caring and compassion that is shown to the learners.

The uniqueness of the school has attracted many people from far and wide who have borrowed a leaf from Mwiyenga to change their places of work. Some have even supported us, we have started a foundation for building two classrooms, thanks to the VPIA for the good work they began and the support, it has enabled us be famous when it comes to character formation and child friendly school. The performance has kept on escalating thus attracting many people.

Can one ever forget a true friend? Never, Not us at Mwiyenga primary school, when the Virtues club is a force to reckon. We love you so much and we are grateful for the kind gesture and your generosity and compassion.

God bless everyone who gives and supports the young vulnerable and needy pupils at Mwiyenga primary school. There is a change of curriculum and teachers are being taken through the trainings of the New Curriculum so it has made us take time to train the new teachers in virtues but plans are underway.
