Virtues Are Solutions To All Problems

Many years ago now, Mwiyenga Primary School was plagued with numerous problems: truancy, absenteeism and early pregnancies. So many ways had been used to manage, but the problems persisted. Then we were introduced to The Virtues Project. The practice of virtues has been the everlasting solution to all our problems.

Pupils have become assertive, purposeful and committed through the implementation of the Five Strategies of The Virtues Project. Self-discipline prevails leading to a higher performance at our school. Mwiyenga Primary School has become a center of interest. Many school educators from far and wide have been our occasional visitors and leave our school more motivated and enthusiastic. Our teachers who are facilitators, along with other facilitators in our area, now provide training to teachers from other schools. The Virtues Project is growing and spreading in Kakamega County and beyond!

Our Virtues Club members have become role models making our Guidance and Counseling Department very effective and lessened their work. Mwiyenga has become the most child-friendly school.

Parents, who had kept away from the school, now feel free to associate themselves with the school, visiting the school and counting the numerous blessings that virtues have brought to our school. Just to mention a few of those blessings: water tanks, uniforms, books, pencils, pens, and most importantly, character formation of their children. Parents now promise to support the school where they can. Payment of school fees for pupils increased the total enrollment from 467 pupils to 623 pupils, having a great impact on the school.

We have started a benevolent group, Mwiyenga Courage Benevolent Group, where we share both sad and happy moments. We have a kitty for our group where each teacher contributes 100 shillings. The money is used when one has a funeral, hospital bills, special occasions, and even for good performance. We also care for needy pupils school lunch fees. On April 21st we helped one of our teachers with her wedding ceremony and on May 12th one of us lost our spouse, and the kitty was very helpful. Virtues have really helped us to unite and think wisely as a school community.

We thank you for your goodness and generosity for standing with us and not abandoning us. We highly value and appreciate you. We are indeed thankful. Now, teachers and pupils share freely, creating a favorable learning environment where virtues are solutions to all problems!

What's Been Happening at Mwiyenga Primary School

Grateful Tuition Recipients

Exciting news! Since our last report, your generous donations helped fund five students' school tuition fees. One student attends Mwiyenga Primary School and the other four are now graduates and attending Kilimo Girl's High School. And the commitment of staff and students at Mwiyenga is spreading The Virtues Project to the new schools that graduates attend. Introductions to The Virtues Project have already begun at Kilimo.

Mwiyenga Virtues Club members have been very committed to Speak the Language of Virtues and practicing all Five Strategies of The Virtues Project. They meet every Tuesday to share experiences in practicing virtues and how their lives have improved. Club members work diligently to make their school beautiful by placing virtue boards everywhere in the school.

Recently, our school participated in a cluster exam with six other schools. The top candidate came from Mwiyenga Primary School with 397 marks out of 500, emerging the best of 293 pupils! This boy is assistant chairperson of the Mwiyenga Virtues Club. The exemplary performance has brought 18 Headteachers and one Curriculum Support Officer to benchmark Mwiyenga Primary School. They are very impressed with the performance, especially the Virtues. They took videos and photos of our virtues boards and pupils singing virtues songs. They are yearning for the virtues training in their schools. One Headteacher has promised to bring the whole staff for benchmarking. Indeed the virtue of Grace is flowing at Mwiyenga! Quoting their words, "You are a special and unique school in Kenya."

The impact of the Five Strategies of The Virtues Project here has been so powerful that it has taken us to another level. The sharing and caring of staff toward one another and our pupils has created a new and stronger relationship of trust that allows pupils be open and share freely their challenges and strengths. They're now ready to help even without asking. They notice when something needs to be done without waiting to be reminded. They are committed both at home and school."

One Good Deed Leads to Another

When Virtues Project International Association (VPIA), supported by Virtues Connection Kakamega, committed to the installation of water tanks at the school, they expected to be fundraising for two more water tanks to complete their water project. Instead, the water tank (covered in virtues words along with a message to honor those who made it possible), inspired another Non-Governmental Organization to finish the water project (large tank) along with installation of six new toilets at the school. The students at Mwiyenga Primary School no longer have to miss school to haul water. The water problem is now solved. The wonderful virtues work being done at the school inspired individual facilitators to fund the parent costs of new toilet installation. One good deed leads to another.

Two parent groups have formed at Mwiyenga to learn and practice the Five Strategies of The Virtues Project and to participate in a Virtues and Community Development Project. We honour Madam Bibiana for the training of parents and teachers in virtues and skills building, including: the Five Strategies of The Virtues Project, table banking, poultry keeping and marketing. Parents are very grateful for the positive changes in their children's behavior, the learning that is occuring, and the outpouring of support for the school. Thanks to the virtuous parents who cooperated and offered unskilled labour during the construction and installation of the second tank and toilets. Thanks also to our virtuous pupils for their commitment, cooperation and helpfulness for working together with the teachers and the labourers and giving a hand when need arose. One good deed leads to another.

Use of the Five Strategies of The Virtues Project continues at Mwiyenga Primary School and word is spreading to other schools. Our lead teacher went to Kilimo Primary School to prepare them for The Virtues Project training by introducing them to the importance of Virtues both in our homes and our schools. The new school received the information with joy and enthusiasm! One good deed leads to another.
