<Deafnuri team. What they want to do?>
Hello. This is Peace Winds Korea. In the previous report we talked about young and enthusiastic team called ‘Deafnuri’ which means the world of deaf. And we talked that they faced the hard reality on their way to create a world for the deaf community and they need our support to do that.
In this letter We would like to tell you what kind of world they want to create for the deaf community as they are and there is the interview with them.
First, Could you please introduce your team.
Deafnuri: Hello. We are Deafnuri. Deafnuri's deaf means 'deaf' in English and korean word 'nuri' means 'the world' in korean. We are the team gathered with the purpose of 'creating a world where even the deaf have the right to be happy'.
Would you briefly introduce what Deafnuri wants to do?
Deafnuri: We, Deafnuri through study of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities learnt what the terms and conditions must be observed for the deaf and we want promote the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities to help other deaf people to learn and know their rights. We are a team that stands together for rights.
As deaf people living in a divided country between South and North Korea we felt the importance of unification education. As well as the sign language of two sides of Korea is different and they don't understand each other and there is no book that teach about North sign language to South and the South sign language to North.
So one of the things that we want to do is produce a travel conversation book in North and South Sign Languages so that the deaf people of North and South can travel without difficulty.
Currently in the Korea all travel products such as guide books, travel services and are centered on non-deaf people and deaf community of Korea have a very limited access to information and have difficulty traveling. But nobody cares that even the deaf people also want to see the worfd and love to traveling.
We think we can solve this problem through inter-Korean unification education by making a travel conversation book in North and South sign languages. We believe that if we make it the deaf people can also enjoy barrier-free travel between South and North Korea.
