Give refugee children in Serbia hope for education

Dear Friends,

Hope you are doing fine and that 2024 started great for you and your loved ones!

We hope that this year will bring a lot of happiness to all of us, and of course, for all children, who are going to be the biggest force we will have in the future.

As they grow, we are getting older, and hopefully wiser.

While we are struggling to do our everyday errands, some are in a more specific situation.

According to the UNHCR Mid-Year Trends report, at the moment there are 30,866 refugees and people in refugee like situations and 209,796 internally displaced persons in Serbia.

What will happen to them, living lives without many bright moments and doing it for years?

Some of those children we help during the years that they are growing up. On that journey, you are our strong backbone.

By giving others, we are showing who we are and what kind of world we are hoping for.

By giving to those who don`t have enough to survive without our support, we are changing the outcome of their lives.

By giving to children, you are making a future for them, empowering them to be a vital part of the society they are living in.

Let`s hope that this year we can help more children than before. We are aware that we cannot help all of them, but we hope that most of them will feel the empathy of the world that treats them harshly.

Kristina's parents came to Raca, near Kragujevac, in 1999 from Kosovo and Metohija, from the village of Istok, near Pec. Seven years later, she was born. After finishing elementary school, Kristina goes to secondary school in Belgrade.

Two years ago, in 2021, she enrolled in the first grade of the Secondary Technical PTT School in Belgrade. Parents, older sister and younger brother remained living in Raca. Her first year in high school was difficult: she switched to more serious studies and responsibilities, but more importantly, she was separated from her family, so moving to a big city was difficult for her.

Kristina is diligent and recently successfully entered the third grade of high school.

When we called her a month ago, she did not answer. It was strange for this girl, who is always in charge. Time passed, but still no word from her. Until she called one rainy afternoon to tell us she had been released from the hospital.

She told us she had been sick a month ago and things were getting worse. Now she takes medicine and antibiotics. She seems to be better, but she is still waiting for the results of the samples that were taken from her. It is not known whether the problem is the bile, the esophagus or the stomach. Her struggle has been going on for a month, and it was more difficult for her in the hospital than now at home. She does not know when she will return to school and regular life, classes, socializing, the life her peers live.

Now we'll have to cover Christina's treatment and hope for the best, for her health and for her.

Kristina`s sister is a student at the Faculty of Mathematics, her brother is in elementary school, and her parents do not have a job. They live on her father's disability pension, which is very small, and children`s allowance which cannot cover even the food for five persons.

Now is the time to help Christina with her biggest battle so far, to get well soon and continue her school days without worry. When we collectively direct our desire and resources where they are most needed, miracles happen. And every child's life is a miracle!
