Helping Where We Can

Ready for breakfast at Helping Hands!

The last three months have been something of a mixed bag for Globalteer, with rules changing regularly both in Peru and Cambodia. It has been most difficult for our community and education projects, but we have been doing what we can, whenever we can. And thankfully, rules in Peru eased enough that we were able finally to re-start our animal welfare project activities! Read the more below…

CAMBODIA

Helping Hands: After Helping Hands opened its doors again in January, we were over the moon to welcome our students back, including 52 new ones! We introduced gardening lessons for our older students this year, so they can learn how to look after the land and grow crops. They started off by planting long bean, chili and eggplant in our on-site garden, which is looking amazing! Our Child Protection Program also kicked off again, offering child safety lessons to children of all ages, so they can learn to keep themselves safe.

Sports Program: As well as welcoming the Helping Hands children back to the sports field, we were able to start our outreach program, taking sports to children in six primary schools in the area. Cambodian children don’t generally have access to sport at school, so they really enjoyed the new activities and challenges. With the support of our donors, we were also able to purchase new equipment to keep our sessions varied, entertaining and, of course, fun!

More Closures: However, after the initial high of 2021, a new outbreak of Covid-19 sadly caused the Cambodian government to close schools once again in March. With case numbers still on the increase, we aren’t sure when we will be able to open again, but we are ready and waiting to get going as soon as we can!

PERU

Picaflor House: Peru’s children were more than ready to return to school when the academic year started in mid-March, but continued high case numbers meant in-person classes were postponed further. Our kids are home-schooling again, so our teachers are back on the phones to support them in whatever way they can. The government is reassessing if rural schools can return to face-to-face classes soon, and if this gets approved, we will jump at the chance to invite smaller groups of kids to Picaflor House for shorter amounts of time. The teachers have identified that support with schoolwork and internet access are the children’s most pressing needs, and of course, the sooner the children can play in our playground and take part in sports or outside activities, the better!

Women’s Empowerment: With the return of restrictions after the end of year holidays, we haven’t been able to make further progress with our Women’s Empowerment project for now. However, GlobalGiving’s International Women’s Week campaign did give us a boost, as we raised almost $650 for the project! We’re excited to be able to use this money to help more women become financially independent, as soon as possible.

PAWS Animal Welfare: We are thrilled to announce that the PAWS mobile clinic is up and running again! Our brand-new veterinary team (Joel, the head vet; Anally, the vet’s assistant; and Alan, the driver/admin assistant) have been visiting the rural villages around Cusco since the beginning of April. They have visited five villages so far, and have carried out initial health checks and basic treatments for over 800 dogs and cats. We have had great uptake from the villagers and already have some dogs signed up for sterilizations, that we hope to be able to start in early May.

Whatever the next few months bring, we hope to be able to share more progress and good news with you soon. For now, all that remains is to say a huge THANK YOU to you, our wonderful supporters!

Looking Forward in the New Year

Helping Hands Cambodia students

2020 was an unusual year for the entire world, and while all of Globalteer’s projects were affected, we were still able to positively impact our communities through our work. Here is a brief update on our projects worldwide and some things we are looking forward to in the coming year.

Cambodia

Sports Programme:

Because Covid-19 cases are low in Cambodia, we have been able to keep our sports programme up and running while keeping proper hygiene protocols in place, which has been a great morale booster for our students. This month, we welcomed our new Sports Project Manager, Jared! Jared is well-known around Siem Reap as “the frisbee guy," as he organizes weekly games of ultimate frisbee, open to all members of the community. He can also speak Khmer, the official language of Cambodia, which is a great asset. We are excited for the new skills and enthusiasm Jared brings to the table and look forward to developing our programme further with his leadership.

HHC Project

Helping Hands Cambodia school continues operating regular classes, per our last update. Because of Covid-related delays, the new school year will now start in February, rather than November as normal. With our sights set on a fruitful 2021, we are hoping to recruit 50 new students for the start of the school year. Spreading the word amongst the community and helping families with the applications is crucial to meeting that goal. Our team is hard at work, making home-visits to the families of prospective new students. We can’t wait to welcome some shining new faces!

Peru

Picaflor House:

Although Picaflor House’s doors are still closed due to Covid restrictions, the Peruvian government is estimating that they will re-open schools in March of this year. Therefore, we are setting our sights on this date for our official re-opening of Picaflor and initiation of classes for the school year. We will be ensuring our hygiene requirements and practices are up to code on our site, and we will make sure to keep our students, teachers, staff, and volunteers as safe as possible. We will also be keeping up to date regularly with any news from the government regarding any changes to their plans for next year. Picaflor’s staff will continue the monthly delivery of food packages to our families most in need!

PAWS:

Although our PAWS work was on hold for the majority of 2020, we are coming into 2021 with renewed energy and a hopeful outlook for the coming year. We have plans to get the ball (and our mobile veterinary clinic) rolling, with our dog welfare campaigns as soon as we are able, bringing desperately needed healthcare to the dogs in the rural villages where we work around Cusco. We are also in the process of hiring a permanent veterinarian and veterinary assistant to work with our team full-time over the course of the next year, which will be an important step for us. September 2020 Update

Cambodia

Sports Programme:

During the last several months, we have been able to conduct sports lessons with our kids near their homes, while maintaining hygiene rules and social distancing. It is important that our students are still receiving physical education during these times, keeping both their bodies and minds active and healthy. We were also able to officially kick off our Goals for Girls project, supporting about 25 girls, bringing them together for a series of leadership workshops on the soccer pitch. The response to the project has been very positive, and we look forward to expanding it once restrictions are lifted!

HHC Project

Schools in Cambodia shut down in March due to the pandemic, but thankfully, our team able to visit our students at home to provide individual lessons, making sure to keep their health and wellbeing at the forefront. The Covid-19 numbers in Cambodia have remained low, and the government allowed schools to reopen recently, meaning HHC has been able to re-open its doors! We are currently teaching classes Monday through Thursday, and we are so glad to be seeing our students smiling faces again!

Peru

Picaflor House: The lock-down in Peru has loosened significantly. However, the government is still not reopening schools or allowing children to travel far from their homes, meaning Picaflor House cannot yet reopen. But since our staff has more flexibility, we are still able to assist our students in what ways we can.

We have identified the families of Picaflor who have been hardest hit economically by the pandemic and will be gathering produce and other food items to deliver to them. Many are single mothers or households where one or both parents have lost their jobs due to the situation, and we want to make sure they have the access to healthy meals that the students would otherwise have at Picaflor House.

PAWS: With our last update, we reported that many street dogs in Cusco were suffering due to restaurant closures throughout the city. Many dogs rely on these restaurants for daily scraps, and without them, they have few other places to turn to for food. During that time, we stepped in and provided street dogs with daily food. We are glad to report that some restrictions have been lifted in Peru’s strict quarantine, and restaurants are open again! This means that street dogs without families can be fed by restaurants with scraps, somewhat relieving the stress of their situation. In the meanwhile, we still continue to provide food and care to the street dogs within our immediate reach in our local community.
