The biggest news this month is that after two long years, Peru's schools are finally open! It seems like Peru breathed a sigh of relief, as schools around the country came back to life this month.
Cambodia
Helping Hands and the Sports project in Cambodia have been in full swing since the beginning of the year. Children are attending school and the Helping Hands School every day and sports is back to being part of our daily offering. The sports programme is also restarting its rural outreach programme, taking coaches and equipment to local schools. And volunteers and interns are slowly starting to return to our projects in Southeast Asia!
Peru
Picaflor House has been offering a holiday programme since January, and has finally returned to normal operations towards the end of this month. Children are catching back up with their schoolwork and remembering what it's like to be in a classroom! Our new outreach programme - the Picaflor House Mobile Library - has really taken off. We are currently helping 90 children from 5 to 14 years old in 5 rural villages to re-engage with formal education. The PAWS Mobile Veterinary Clinic has coniniued its routine check ups and sterilisation programme, and we have extended our education programme as well. We are running dog training sessions with a small group of dogs and their owners, to teach people what their dogs are capable of and improve standards of care for animals. We've had a steady stream of interns and volunteers in Peru since January and more on the books for the coming months.
Empowering Rural, Peruvian Girls and Young Women
We have long been aware that girls and women in rural Peru don’t have the same opportunities as boys and men. Our Women’s Empowerment project works to address this by helping women gain financial independence through guinea pig farming. But recent community visits have left us wondering if we can do more. Earlier this month, our intern Georgia and other team members, ran a focus group with teenage girls in one of the communities. This aimed to find out more about their experiences and what support they need. As a result, we have identified a need for girls-only spaces in these communities. These spaces will offer girls and young women opportunities to explore different activities, form relationships with one another, express their concerns and find ways to address issues they face. Based on Georgia’s research, the Globalteer team will work on getting a project up and running in the next few months.
