Street Teenage Girls Face HIV Risk Without Testing

By Joy Ojochogwu Etubi | Project Leader

Dear Donors,

We sincerely appreciate the donors who have shown support for the Test & Treat 2,000 Street Teenage Girls for HIV project. Your concern for vulnerable young girls living on the streets means a great deal to our team and to the communities we hope to serve. At this time, however, the contributions received are still too limited to begin the planned testing and treatment activities.

Across several cities in Nigeria, teenage girls living on the streets face many daily dangers. Many have been separated from their families and survive without shelter or consistent support. In these conditions, they are exposed to abuse, unsafe relationships, and serious health risks.

Most of these girls have never been tested for HIV and have little access to health services. Without knowing their status, those who may be infected continue living without treatment. When HIV goes untreated, it weakens the body, increases vulnerability to illness, and raises the risk of transmission to others.

This project plans to reach 2,000 teenage girls through mobile health teams that will visit areas where street girls commonly gather. The teams will provide confidential HIV testing, counseling, and immediate support. Girls who test positive will receive starter treatment and referrals to nearby health centers for continued care.

Health workers and trained volunteers will also share information about prevention, personal health, and available services. The aim is to help these girls understand their health, know their status, and gain access to treatment before serious complications occur.

We are grateful to the donors who have already shown interest in helping these young girls. Their encouragement reminds us that many people care about protecting vulnerable youth. Continued support from others who share this concern will make it possible to begin the outreach and provide the care these girls urgently need.

Sincerely,

Joy Ojochogwu Etubi
