Schools of Virtue Can Transform Community

“Social transformation starts with young people” as Dan Popov, one of the founders of The Virtues ProjectTM, once said.

In recent reports for this project, you have seen how teachers are using the Five Strategies of The Virtues Project™ to awaken virtues in their students - virtues like trustworthiness, kindness and integrity -- as they learn and grow into adulthood.

And this is happening in schools all over the world. Schools are transforming the lives not only of their students, but also their teachers, administrators, and parents.

VPIA is creating a new designation programme to acknowledge the work that these schools have already been doing and to inspire excellence and purposeful sharing enabling these schools to learn from each other. The programme has identified three levels of implementation of The Five Strategies and has formalized guidelines for each level: Emerging, Competent and Exemplary.

Schools worldwide will be recognized for their work withThe Virtues Project. This unified worldwide community of schools will be brought together to learn from and inspire each other. It is envisioned that the successes of these schools will attract other schools to adopt the strategies.

The programme will provide resources to enable schools to easily incorporate The Five Strategies into school curricula and into work with school families and the broader community. Materials, both physical and digital, will be developed for schools, teachers and parents. On-line training and FAQ sessions will facilitate the formation of a community of schools and shared resources on our webpage.

The three levels allow schools to evolve into implementing TVP at various levels and stages. Schools can proceed through the levels at their own pace and comfort in the implementation process. We look to schools who achieve ‘Exemplary’ level to mentor other schools and deepen the connection between diverse schools around the world.

The pilot stage involves recruiting schools from around the world that are currently implementing The Five Strategies or that are interested in beginning to work with The Virtues Project. The full programme will be formally rolled out in 2024.

Strategies to Drive Change -- in Schools

In the previous report for this project, you learned about a school in Malaysia where teachers were using the Five Strategies of The Virtues Project™ (TVP) to help youth learn self-reliance, courage and integrity -- while they explore their own humanity. You can re-read the Malasia story here.

Similar stories are happening in schools all over the world -- in Kenya, Netherlands, China, Jordan, Australia, Japan, Canada, Finland, and so many more. Young people everywhere become better persons as they learn to use virtues like kindness, respect and trustworthiness that have actually been theirs from the beginning.

Your donations have made this happen. The next step is to make these successes extend to many more schools. Growth depends on ongoing global initiatives, including:

Books, posters, cards, flyers, and acknowledgment cards of The Virtues Project are being prepared for use by schools that adopt TVP.
A worldwide initiative has begun to honor schools that are implementing effective ways to integrate The Virtues Project into their local curriculum.
Support is being made available for local translations of key materials to enhance usability of the materials.
Global production and distribution capabilities are being investigated to reduce costs of product acquisition.

And every success story will be promoted globally to raise awareness of the power of The Virtues Project to change school dynamics for the better.

Our Strategies Are Driving Change - In Schools

Meet Sahana, a young teacher in Malaysia:

“Each time I sit with a student and see them notice that I am offering receptive silence and not directing their thoughts, but validating their feelings, I sense a deep sense of respect. I feel a space being created around us built on trust and compassion.”

When Sahana employs this strategy of The Virtues ProjectTM with her students, they find themselves in a space where they can begin to work through their personal challenges and disappointments -- in their own way and on their own terms. These youth are learning self-reliance, courage and integrity -- while they explore their own humanity.

"Offering Companioning" is one of five strategies of The Virtues Project. When you Offer Companioning, you see another person as their own champion and allow them to explore their own situation and feelings in order to chart their own path toward personal growth.

You can read more about Sahana’s story here and how several strategies of The Virtues Project are helping her students become their best selves. In Sahana’s words, “It is a true honor to look at the world through the hearts of our young people.” And these young people become better persons as they learn to use virtues like kindness, respect and trustworthiness that have actually been theirs from the beginning.

Experiences like this are happening in all regions of the world. Schools are learning that the strategies of The Virtues Project are not just for students but for the teachers too. And they work even better when parents -- and even entire communities -- are included in the journey.
