Inspiring Virtues Globally

Thanks to your generosity,  Virtues Project training, and an evaluation of its effectiveness,  is now underway in select Tanzanian schools!  The goal of this project is to prove the effectiveness of  The Virtues Project model as a replacement for corporal punishment, that will provide the tools necessary to create a culture of caring and safety and  an environment conducive to learning.

Sexual abuse, harassment and corporal punishment are widespread in schools in Tanzania, according to a report by Human Rights Watch (HRW) .

The United Nations children's charity (UNICEF) defines corporal punishment on children as a violation of their human rights, dignity and bodily integrity, which also impacts "children's engagement with schooling and capacity to learn" and can have "long-lasting implications for their life chances".

Although the caning of children was banned by the government,  a suitable discipline model has not been identified to replace this practice, so the caning of children continues.  Implementation of the Five Strategies of The Virtues Project offers an effective alternative to caning.

This past month, a Master Facilitator of The Virtues Project traveled to Tanzania to provide professional evaluation training and design support  for the project leader.  Your support helped fund travel, training and the development of evaluation tools.

Upon completion of  virtues training and  a successful evaluation, government officials will provide additional funding for The Virtues Project implementation in schools throughout Tanzania.

Your continued support  will help ensure the successful completion of  this project, and most importantly, improve children's safety and capacity to learn in Tanzania.

Thanks to your generosity and understanding, Mwiyenga Primary School has water, THE VIRTUES PROJECT is thriving there, and they are leading the way for virtues to happen in other schools! 

Mwiyenga Primary School is at the 78% mark in Kakamega County Kenya, according to the latest ranking of child friendly, performance, and infrastructure in schools.   Kudos to VIRTUES that they have made Mwiyenga outshine so many schools both public and private!  "We are indeed humbled that virtues are transforming lives here." Judith, Lead Virtues Teacher at Mwiyenga.

A team of 48 Head Teachers, 2 Curriculum Support Officers and 1 Sub County Director of Education from Sotik County visited this school for Bench Marking.  Bench Marking means, "learning from those ahead of you in performance so as to improve."  They had come to learn from the teachers at Mwiyenga to be able to improve their performance and deal with discipline cases in their schools, since corporal punishment has been declared illegal. They learned that the answer is to implement The Virtues Project! 

A portion of your donations to this project over the past three months have been allocated for Mwiyenga Primary School to provide virtues materials, school uniforms, water and more in exchange for teaching virtues to students, teachers, families and other schools. The first of three water tanks has been installed. Materials, purchased and shipped from the US, and uniforms, purchased in Kenya, are due to arrive in August.
