Hello Project Supporters
It has been several months of training for most of the road racing and marathon runners that you support.
We are delighted to inform you that Alfred, one the underprivileged runner who has really shown much improvement in marathon training and with our recommendation has been invited to take part in one of the marathon races in Canada.
The marathon event will take place on 2nd May, 2015. Alfred and other underprivileged runners like him have dedicated themselves to intensive training. Special thanks to your support that has made it possible for them to focus and train.
In preparation for the marathon race in Canada, Alfred is required to raise part of the ticket and accommodation money. He will also be required to have some money for VISA application. We would love to help him get to this international competition and we welcome your support. This could be the big break that he deserves. This marathon race is an opportunity that could change his life forever.
Since the last report, the project has raised $200. Thanks so much for your kind assistance. These funds have gone towards supporting Alfred and the other runners - providing room, board and travel assistance to races in Kenya. These races have helped them develop further.
Despite the progress, we regret to inform you that we are phasing out this project. We have been encountering problems in getting timely reports from the field. We definitely get the updates / reports - but we do not get them as frequently as we desire / need to provide you with updates.
As an alternative project, can we recommend that you follow and support our vocational training project - providing training opportunities for deserving youths? Be sure to go to this project and sign up for updates. Feel free to also email your questions to us at any time.
In the future - if you would like to hear more about Alfred and other runners, please feel free to contact us. We will also post updates to the Kenyan runners project here.
Best Wishes
The Develop Africa Team

Alfred Completes The Race With a Respectable Time

Very competitive race
The much awaited Standard Chartered international marathon in Nairobi was held on Sunday 26th October 2014 along the streets of Kenya’s capital city. The event which attracted more than 25,000 runners from all over the world was in its 12th edition since it began. The Standard Chartered Marathon event raises money for “Seeing is Believing” campaign.
Every year several underprivileged runners from Kenya use the event as a stepping stone to the international road racing events. By so doing some of these runners secure themselves better opportunities in athletic careers. The event attracts several sponsors from around the world based on the fact that Kenya is known for long distance running. Those runners who are lucky to excel during the marathon event get sponsored immediately. However, competition in Kenya in long distance running is extremely high.
Alfred, one the underprivileged runners that we support together, participated in this year’s Standard Chartered Marathon in Nairobi. Like many others, he was hoping to finish among the top ten in order to secure a major sponsorship. However despite being with the leaders until the 38th Kilometer of the 42Km race, he fell back from the pack of leaders in the closing kilometers. Being a hard working athlete who never gives up, Alfred managed to complete the race in a good time of 2hrs 24min. At high altitude, that was a very respectable time.
Thank you so much for supporting Alfred with registration, travel and accommodation finances during the marathon event. Alfred will be resuming training in about two weeks in readiness for other upcoming local road races in Kenya.
With YOUR on-going support,we are confident that he and other runners that we support will even do better in upcoming races.nnThanks again for your support.

Dear friends-
Your chances of winning a road race are greatly increased if you are able to break away from rest of the crowd or field.
This ability is crucial and this is what we are together offering to the runners that we are supporting. We are providing them with the extra edge, support and resources that they need to break away, excel and win. .
The lives of several underprivileged runners are being changed one at a time because of YOUR support. Because of your support, runners like Alfred are now able to train under favorable training conditions. This is giving them an extra boost.
Alfred is a happy underprivileged runner today because we have extended a helping hand in his athletic career. Alfred has since been able to train and compete locally in Kenya at different road races ranging from the 10K to full marathon. He is currently preparing to take part in the great Standard Chartered Bank Marathon which will be taking place in Nairobi on October 26th. Alfred will be competing in the full marathon race during the event. We wish him the very best!
Alfred like most of the other underprivileged in Kenya will be using the Standard Chartered Bank Marathon event as an opportunity to secure himself a chance to break away from poverty. Alfred has shown potential of becoming a successful marathon runner given the necessary support. So far he has be able to run a personal best of 2 hours and 16 minutes in full marathon competition at high altitude venue.
Because of YOUR support, the lives of Alfred and many others like him will never be the same. Thanks so much for your kind assistance!
