Dear Friend,
Warmest greetings and thank you very much for your generous support to our project improving biodiversity in Misamis. Our place is very rich in biodiversity but these are losing very quickly due to intrusion of poor farmers going up the mountains in order to find land to till and to raise food. Because this situation could not be avoided due to population pressure, we are promoting crop diversification or the growing of cash crops, trees and vegetables so that farmers can have something to eat at the same time improving the situation in the mountainsides. Towards this, we focused our attention during this reporting period to developing a model farm wherein farmers can train and at the same time access much-needed farming inputs like seeds and planting materials. Our demonstration and training farm is 6 hectares and located in a municipality in Misamis. We are growing corn, banana, vegetables, legumes, upland rice, ginger and other crops. Soon we will open the are for our training activities.
Thank you very much for your support.
Very sincerely yours,
Cora

Dear Friend,
Warm greetings and thank you very much for your generous support to our project to plant trees in order to improve the biodiversity of our place. Our focus during this reporting period is to promote the growing and care of indigenous but high-valued fruit and timber tree species including bamboo. The Philippines is very rich in high-valued trees but they are slowly being destroyed by illegal logging and uncontrolled use for the furniture and housing industry. Increase in population also contributes to the loss as mountain lands are used for farming by lowland people with no place to farm in the lowlands going up to hills in order to eke out an existence. They often do slash-and-burn and this is indeed very destructive. During this reporting period, we visited 5 villages in order to introduce the benefits of planting trees and how to plant them so that they would not crowd the planting of cash crops and food for the table. A total of 120 farmer-leaders were oriented about this approach and we hope that they will be able to create a ripple effect and engage other farmers.
Hoping for your continuing support to our initiative.
Very sincerely yours,
Cora

Dear Friend,
Warm greetings and thank you very much for your generous support in order for us to improve upland biodiversity in Misamis Oriental. The project is off to a good start with local supporters pledging financial assistance to this project. We aim to plant 30,000 tree seedlings of different species this year with the species comprising bamboo, cacao, durian and hardwood timber species. Aside from the income consideration for small farmers this project is aimed at reducing soil loss due to erosion as well as improving soil fertility. Our target project area is the west Misamis Oriental mountain range that provides water to Cagayan de Oro rivers and streams. This reporting period we started to plant shade plants that will shade the young seedlings from too much heat. The shade plant is mainly banana. We were able to plant 750 banana for this project.
Agian thank you very much for your generosity.
Very sincerely yours,
Cora
