Help a Child: Provide Access to Water in Nigeria

Dear Supporters, Friends and Family of Serendipity,

It is estimated worldwide that over 900 million people do not have access to safe clean drinking water of which 84% are in rural dwellings (WHO/UNICEF 2010). This figure however has improved as currently 700 million people do not have access to improved water sources. This is a far cry from 2010 and we still have a long way to go to at least half this figure come 2030 in order to meet the sustainable development goal 6.

Improved groundwater supplies (particularly drilled and hand[1]dug water wells) provide a significant proportion of rural dwell[1]ers with access to safe water within a reasonable distance of their home. Groundwater is almost ubiquitous in nature and can be developed relatively cheaply and progressively to meet de[1]mand. It often has a lower capital cost than surface water, gen[1]erally has excellent natural quality and can normally be used without treatment. Groundwater always has some cover which protects it from the threat of pollution from human activities. This is because the processes of natural attenuation in the un[1]saturated zone (i.e. above the water table) work to reduce or eliminate contamination of the groundwater system (ARGOSS 2001). There have been considerable developments since the 1960s in water lifting technologies, with numerous high-quality, afforda[1]ble pumps available on the market. In addition, the water-well drilling industry is growing in many countries. However, there are still major concerns regarding the construction quality and cost of drilled water wells in many developing countries.

Groundwater is the black gold that we have in Africa, and it entails utmost care with professional drilling services to ensure that the right aquifer is reached, and thus adequate water is provided for our rural communities lasting for 10-15 years.

At Serendipity one of our goals is to ensure we are transparent and accountable to our communities in terms of provision of access to safe cleaning drinking water. As with all the projects we have worked on, with partnership with our community members, the first step is to get a geophysical and hydrogeology report done for the right water table that will last for a long time.

Second step we did is to put up a call for tender to construct additional 15 new handpumps, rehabilitate 5 handpumps, the outcome is for 1million 5 hundred thousand additional persons to have access to safe clean drinking water because of your kind donations.

Tender has been advertised in one of our dailies and responses have been coming in. The tender will be opened in two weeks’ time after the deadline elapsed and the successful bidder will start work on the projects.

Rural Communities all over Nigeria are grappling with poor infrastructure such as access to basic healthcare facilities, poverty is at an all time high with the current inflation rate and recently with climate change in the offing the situation is getting worse.
In Northern Nigeria where our programs are based, climate change is having an adverse effect With rising temperatures, fluctuating rainfall patterns, escalating flooding, drought and desertification, the global impact of climate change has been quite immense and most especially in our region. The devastating effects of these unexpected weather conditions have affected water security nationally and globally. For instance, the rise in temperature, variations in rainfall and decline in precipitation have led to the evaporation of surface lakes, streams,ponds and rivers which are the mainstay of our communities.
This year's theme for World Water Day is Groundwater, Making the Invisible Visible, which aptly highlights underground water as a hidden treasure which can be utilised to augment shrinking surface water. It also advocates for the need to work together to sustainably manage this precious resource.
Unlike surface water - rivers, streams and lakes which are readily available to be tapped - ground water must be extracted or pumped. However, because it is underground, groundwater is protected from the debilitating effects of climate change thus makes it a good source of safe clean drinking water.
Harnessing groundwater to ensure water security is a surefire way to provide access to safe clean drinking water.Groundwater is not a new concept as an estimated 50% of the world’s urban population depends on underground water sources. It is however in the spotlight because of recent, conversations around it, one of which is a new WaterAid report ‘Groundwater: The world’s neglected defence against climate change’, which describes it as the world’s insurance policy against climate change with the potential to save hundreds of thousands of lives especially in our vulnerable communities.Groundwater is the Liquid Gold yet to be harnessed!!
Behind all these black clouds is a rainfall of blessing and a silver lining because with your kind donations, we are able to make an impact on over 1million lives, 15 Local Governing Councils and 30 communities in Kano, Nigeria, we say a big THANK YOU for that!! We want to provide more pumps, tapes and pipes to more communities in the coming months so our people drink safe clean water free from diseases. Climate Change is affecting us in Northern Nigeria as the rains which should have started are yet to come for our communities to harvest rain water for use. Temperatures are rising, the streams, ponds, rivers and lakes that our communities who do not yet have access to water are drying up.
