Project Report | May 14, 2024
Interim Report for the Period Feb 2024 to May 2024

By Heather Ferreira | Evaluation, Research & Grants Advisor

Introduction

Way Forward After the Rescue is a project where Rescue Foundation supports some of its survivors who have compeleted their rehabilitation and desire to pave a way for themelves.  It is crucial  period as once our girls are released by the courts,  they are still in need of support and protection as they decide to equip themselves with further education, livelihood skills, secure jobs and take charge of their lives

With that end in mind Rescue Foundation has started a short stay home or a group home wherein few of our Major Girls can stay, pursure their dreams of securilng jobs and making a living in the city of dreams, Mumbai.  Few of our girls do not want to go back home due to family poverty or at times the family does not want them, or we are not able to locate the family members.

This Group Home temporarily supports the girls with shelter, food, counselling, livelihood training and linking them to job opportunities

On an average the Home can support 15 plus girls who have decided to stay back with Rescue Foundation and seek education, jobs, or any training.

Post this short term care and support the Girls are encouraged to chart out their lives gradually and move into the mainstream society.

Counselling & Problem Solving

At times there is a need for individual and group counselling.  Few of the girls who are either assisting the Home or working outside need guidance from the staff of the Shelter Home.  This month we had to conduct a in house problem solving meeting to respond to some issues the girls were facing as part of living together.  We have been making efforts to equip the girls to face life challenges by solving their own problems with maturity.  This is an important exercise prior to going out and making a better life for themselves in the world

Exursion & Retreat to Rishikesh, Mount Abu

A trip was organized for all the residents of Rescue Foundation Home Girls to Rishikesh and later few days to Mount Abu. Most of our girls joined in, an as they were Major Girls they were given the responsibility to take care of the other girls who were part of the bigger group.  It was a time of learning and relaxing.  They also got to see the beautiful Mount Abu and were rejuvinated by the serene environment.

Training & Product Making

4 of our girls are Trainers for Tailoring, teaching English,  Art & Craft and Zumba and Meditation daily to about 35 other residents of the Kandivali Home

Besides training they conduct workshops to train them in making products such as cloth bags, jewellery, embroidery and stitching clothes.  This endevour keeps the new residents engaged in handicrafts and learning new skills

The products are then sold to our partners, visitors and every girl involved in making these products receives monetary compensation

This project has been a big favorite of all the girls, it also gives them an opportunity to become Mentors, Role Models for other girls

They are given periodic training in managing the project, documentation of the process and outcomes each month.

These Trainers not only train residents at our Mumbai Home but also visit our other Homes in Boisar, Pune and Delhi imparting these trainings to those homes too

Conclusion

Though this project is small as they involve just a handful of girls but we realize the impact it makes on these girls lives is a lasting one and is self sustaining
