2022/23 Winter report

By Maria Deresne Tanarki | Chairman of the Board of Trustees

The programme started with 32 participants in 2 groups in the second half of 2022. One group of children from the 48-bed children's home in Székesfehérvár, the other from the residential homes in Sárbogárd.

The Sárbogárd group started the implementation of the programme later, but thanks to their continuous work, the implementation was completed in December 2022.

The Székesfehérvár group started well, but due to a change of leadership, implementation was only partial. Among the modules, the Self-awareness module and the conflict management training could not be implemented due to operational difficulties. I have personally discussed with the new leader on 3 occasions about possible ways of implementation, but despite this, no progress was made.

In the two modules implemented, the psychologist specialist explored the difficulties and anomalies in children's self-awareness and self-esteem. During the conflict management training, the participants learned about correct and incorrect ways of handling conflicts and practiced them in situational games. The aim was to reduce aggression and learn the correct methods.

In the Sárbogárd group, 16 children participated. Other children living in residential homes were also able to participate in some of the modules. In addition to the transfer of knowledge, techniques and methods, all the professionals were keen to focus on experience.

Children were particularly affected by what they saw and heard when visiting educational institutions and workplaces. The shared experiences and activities also proved to be good community-building activities. The opening event of the programme was hosted by one of the residential homes. The event gave the children an opportunity to learn about the content of the programme, its modules, the objective to be achieved, and possible places of experience, which were then expanded during the implementation. After the content, the event continued with a campfire.

The planned buffet costs for the sessions were not used because the home hosting the session provided the snacks for the participants.

The planned costs for paper and stationery were not used either, as they were provided by the hostels.

The remaining funds were requested by the hostels to be used for other purposes. The designated purpose was 2 bicycles and 1 loudspeaker, which were approved for the benefit of the children.

Children in residential care homes have enough bicycles available if they want to cycle to work or educational institutions in the municipality.

The communication training is a great help for all groups in developing oral and written expression skills and in introducing themselves. The participants also learned the basic rules of introduction and CV writing.

Learning about trades and professions was based mainly on the interests of the participants, but the children were also introduced to interesting and dangerous occupations.

Field trips were made to car repair shops, hairdressers, nail salons, commercial and catering establishments and farms.

At the beginning of the programme, the members of the group had less of an idea of where and in which educational institution they could acquire the necessary knowledge for their future profession or occupation, and no idea of the career they would choose.

During the self-awareness module, the children's values were reinforced and areas to be developed and strengthened were identified. This also helped to make their self-evaluation more realistic.

An evaluation of the implementation of the programme was carried out in December. The children and the professionals involved summarised the results and expressed their ideas and requests in a good atmosphere. Following the evaluation, a fun Santa Claus party was held, with music provided by the new loudspeaker.

According to the experts, the programme has achieved its goal of helping children to decide on the difficult question of further education and to choose a profession or a vocation. It was also a good community-builder.

The participants and the Foundation would like to express their gratitude for the support that made the programme possible.

We are currently preparing our programme for 2023. Some of the residents of the housing homes in Mogard, who did not participate in the 2022 programme, have indicated that they would like to participate in the group to be launched in 2023. In addition, we have not given up on the children from the Székesfehérvár home, and we would like to see the negotiations for the launch of a group be successful.

Thank you for your generous support.
