Nepal & Widowhood: a report

By Surendra Pariyar | Project Leader

Introduction: Widowhood is a significant social and cultural issue in Nepal. The country, with its diverse ethnic groups and deep-rooted traditions, has a substantial population of widowed women. This report aims to shed light on the challenges faced by widows in Nepal, their social and economic implications, and the efforts being made to support and empower them.

Extent of Widowhood: Widowhood affects a large number of women in Nepal. According to various studies and reports, it is estimated that there are over half a million widows in the country. These widowed women come from diverse backgrounds and face unique struggles based on their cultural, social, and economic circumstances.

Challenges Faced:

  1. Social Stigma: Widows often face discrimination and social ostracization due to traditional beliefs and cultural norms. They may be subjected to societal restrictions, exclusion from community events, and even considered "inauspicious" in some communities.
  2. Economic Hardship: Widows often experience financial difficulties, particularly if they were economically dependent on their husbands. Limited access to resources, lack of employment opportunities, and land ownership issues exacerbate their economic vulnerability.
  3. Limited Support Systems: Many widows lack emotional and social support networks, as their social connections may diminish after the loss of their spouse. This isolation can contribute to mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.
  4. Legal Inequality: In some instances, widows face legal challenges related to property rights, inheritance, and access to government welfare schemes. Gender-biased laws and inadequate implementation of existing legislation can further exacerbate their vulnerability.

Efforts for Empowerment:

  1. Government Initiatives: The Government of Nepal has implemented various programs and policies to support widows. These include providing social security allowances, vocational training opportunities, and land ownership rights for widowed women.
  2. Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs): Numerous NGOs are working tirelessly to address the issues faced by widows. They provide various support services such as counseling, legal aid, skill development training, and income-generating activities.
  3. Community Awareness Programs: Efforts are being made to raise awareness and challenge societal stereotypes associated with widowhood. Community-level initiatives promote inclusivity, education, and gender equality, fostering supportive environments for widowed women.

Conclusion: Widowhood remains a pressing issue in Nepal, with widowed women facing numerous challenges related to social stigma, economic hardship, and limited support systems. However, concerted efforts by the government, NGOs, and community-based organizations are working towards empowering widows and challenging the traditional norms that perpetuate their marginalization. By providing access to resources, education, and support systems, Nepal can strive towards a more inclusive society, ensuring that widowed women can live with dignity, equality, and empowerment.

Bahini Foundation's Role:
Taking all these into consideration and seeing first hand the issues of singel women and the day-to-day issues they face, we are doing what we can to support them and to empower them.

Our major mission has always been "PREVENTION" of all sorts of abuse, exploitation and trafficking of women and girls. So Awareness plays an important part. We are providing education to girl children as much as possible, providing awareness on laws, health, hygiene, financial literacy among others to bring them wider to the reality so they can stand on their own in safety, dignity and confidence!

Note: This report provides a general overview of widowhood in Nepal and may not encompass all aspects and perspectives on the topic.
