2024, Empowering Youth

"From Brasils" exhibition at SESC

Dear donor,

The Nós Group kicked off 2024 with a slew of exciting developments! We're thrilled to share our latest achievements since our last update. We're staying true to our commitment of working with youth, providing transformative experiences, and broadening horizons.

In early 2024,continuing with the pillars we work on with our youth (employment, housing, citizenship, education/culture), our youth group had the chance to visit the "From Brasils" exhibition at SESC Belenzinho (Social Service of Commerce). It was a fantastic opportunity for them to explore the SESC space, where they encountered a public venue in the East Zone, and participated in a guided tour of the exhibition, showcasing works from 240 artists across Brazil. This experience was a lesson in the cultural significance of black art and thought, highlighting the importance of visibility and effective dissemination of cultural knowledge and repertoires.

In March, our teens engaged in a thought-provoking discussion on mental health and racism with Kwame Yonatan, a psychoanalyst, writer, and Ph.D. member of the Margens Clínicas collective. This lively exchange delved into the mental health challenges facing black and peripheral populations, and explored individual and collective care possibilities.

Throughout the quarter, the Nós Group organized and selected the teens who will be part of the Youth Committee. This committee will act as a liaison between the group and our technical team, and serve as spokespeople for the issues brought forth by the group. The Youth Committee marks the beginning of the group's journey into political and social participation, allowing them to experience both self-organization for representation and participation in conferences and seminars on youth, citizenship, and policies for system graduates.

In March, we also held the first session of the "Cultural Entrepreneurship" course for Nós Group adolescents. Topics covered included entrepreneurship basics, the role of an entrepreneur, and event production. Participants enthusiastically engaged in discussions, asking questions and showing keen interest in the subject matter.

Lastly, part of our technical team, along with two teenage members of the youth group and a young lawyer trained by the Nós Group, participated in the "My Life Outside of Care" Seminar held in March in Belo Horizonte. The young lawyer shared challenges and best practices in the foster care exit process, while our coordinator took part in a panel discussion on the challenges of adolescence in care and transition processes to independence, alongside other inspiring stories.

We're excited about the progress we've made so far and look forward to what the future holds for the Nós Group and the youth we support. We remain committed to providing meaningful opportunities and fostering individual development for all involved.

Thank you for your support,

Kind wishes,
