Swingin' into Spring

By Lottie Parsons | Marketing and PR

Dear Friends,

As we welcomed in 2025, World Heart Beat was delighted to be shortlisted for an IMPACT award by the Royal Philharmonic Society (RPS Awards), the Oscars of Classical Music! It is a fantastic recognition for us as a grassroots music charity for our invaluable work celebrating the transformative power of music to enrich and change lives for the better and bring communities together.

Kicking off this week, from 12-15 March, we are excited to launch our first ever Piano in The Elms Festival celebrating ‘everything piano’ in the heart of Nine Elms. The festival will bring the piano to the heart of our community, showcasing phenomenal artists and providing performance opportunities for local talent of all ages and backgrounds, as well as free lessons for young people. Intimate café piano concerts, an inspiring masterclass with Steinway artist GKO and vibrant performances will help foster a deep sense of pride and connection across Nine Elms and beyond. Please come and join us!

The end of 2024 provided a lot of music-making opportunities for our young musicians. Our Gig Band Christmas Concert and Our Community Christmas Concert with carolling, festive classics and mince pies were enormous successes and fantastic opportunities for our young musicians to shine on stage and share their talents, building confidence and self-esteem.

We also took part in the Big Give Christmas Campaign ‘Bring a smile to a child this Christmas’ which raised vital funds to help provide music tuition via our First Beats Programme to a primary school situated on one of Wandsworth’s housing estates. This programme offers weekly free instrumental tuition taster sessions to 48 students from local primary schools: Herbert Morrison Primary, St George’s Primary, Griffin Primary, St Mary’s Primary. Thank you for all the donations and everyone that took part in the Big Give!

Last month, our Heart Beat Latin band, led by Cuban violinist and jazz musician Omar Puente performed in our Winter Warmer party at ourHeart Beat’ home on Kimber Road. This informal party was the perfect opportunity for us to invite friends, supporters and those who have signed up to our membership programme to come and see first-hand what we do, and to help provide vital funds to support our work.

It's all go at Heart BeatOur Bursary Songwriting, Guitar, Vocal and Gig Training musicians continue to grow from strength to strength as they take part in lessons, ensembles and performance opportunities. Our advanced jazz vocalists performed at ASTOR Hostels last Friday 7 March and we have recently taken 16 young students on trips to the London Philharmonic Orchestra at The Southbank Centre.

We have been running monthly Emerge Creative Network sessions to connect and support young producers and emerging artists looking to develop a career in the music industry. Led by producer Anjelo Disons, over 25 artists have been attending regularly. Guest speakers included Jonathan Chabala, NK-OK productions and Khobiyb Elsamani.

Our seconSinging Soirée for our vocal students is scheduled for 24 March. This is an open opportunity for all World Heart Beat singers to perform and showcase their work with family and friends, alongside a live band!

We have also started a new Grade 5 Music Theory and Conducting Course with Conductor Alice Farnham and a partnership with National Opera Studios to encourage young musicians to explore Opera. Alyson Devenish led a repetiteur masterclass in December to support 10 young pianists in working with opera productions.

We also held our Open Day recently to welcome new families to see and hear what we do. 125 children and families signed up for this vibrant, joyful and cute afternoon allowing young children to try out an instrument and see which onethey bond with and for our young students to inspire and chat to parents and children alike.

We have also confirmed a masterclass with Hilary Coates, one of the most sought-after piano teachers in the UK (Professor of Piano at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance) on 29 April (47pm) at World Heart Beat Embassy Gardens. Our young students will be working with her, and it will be open for the public to attend and watch on the day.

We have a brilliant line-up of concerts from the worlds of jazz, classical, folk, contemporary and much more. You can also catch our young students performing, attend masterclasses, or sit back and enjoy a coffee or a light bite in our cafe.

We cannot thank you enough for your support!
