You’ll be happy to know that with your help, Water Wells for Africa (WWFA), again broke our record for most wells installed in a year!
In 2022, your water-delivering team installed 100 water wells to rural hard-to-reach areas!
Twenty-one (21) of those wells were gifted to schools and the other 79 were placed in villages.
I’m sharing a few photos with you about Chilembwe Village and apologize for the low quality, but I know you want to see real illustrations of the work we’re doing together.
The water wells you help provide through WWFA improve the lives of so many people who had previously been drinking water from unprotected wells or rivers. The people not only face the indignity of having to ingest such low-quality water, but they are also continually at risk of acquiring waterborne diseases.
This was the case with the people of Chilembwe Village in Thyolo District. For a long time, they were drinking from an unprotected well which was swampy (see the picture below). The sight is unbearable! To think that they were drinking green brackish water is appalling.
So, when they received the gift of a lifetime – a WWFA water well – everything about their lives was improved! They no longer faced long walks to the water source, their illnesses were immediately reduced, and the community came together to be part of the water well process.
You see, we always partner with the village from start to finish. When a village is selected to receive a water well, we require them to form a committee of 10 people (men and women) to manage the water well – the Community-Based Maintenance team (CBM). They take the lead in caring for the water well equipment, and in organizing their community for orderly water collection and for attending WWFA’s Homemade Hygiene Training.
The committee also learns how to completely dismantle the water well pump and re-assemble it. This way, whenever there are mechanical issues, the team knows how to rectify it.
In 2022, WWFA in collaboration with the Malawi government Water Department, organized100 CBM trainings (91 took place that year, and the remaining 9 this year)! This is an amazing feat of dedication and organization by our small but mighty Malawi WWFA team. Thank you for supporting them in their work in the field!
I hope you feel very happy about Chilembwe Village and the 99 other locations that are living improved lives because you care! We’re very happy to partner with you, and look forward to making more good things happen together.
