[Less than a 2-minute read.]
Our team in Malawi just relayed this story with me, so I want to share it with you.
They recently visited a village called Kandeu in the country of Malawi, Africa. Our WWFA team was there to determine if the village’s need for a water well was legitimate. We always perform a verification process before installing any water wells.
One of the main ways to confirm the village’s situation is to find out what their current water source was like. So, our team went for a trek with some women of Kandeu. It had been rainy which makes the area bushy and full of tall grasses (see photo below), so the women need to be escorted to get the water because they’re afraid of being attacked and they’re fearful of poisonous snakes they may encounter on their way to and from getting the water.
On this particular day, the Kandeu village chief went along as we documented the journey.
They led the WWFA team to their only source of water, which was nothing but a dirty pond, in a clearing among the bush. The ladies demonstrated how they dig a pit next to the pond, wait for water to seep into their pit, and then begin the arduous and time-consuming task of scooping water into their buckets.
The chief and the ladies said that they’ve never had clean water and sicknesses like cholera were the order of the day in their village. They had lost some people due to the deadly sickness.
They mentioned that their children are mostly absent from school or late for classes due to scarcity of water in the area, and the situation becomes worse during the dry season.
It was an exciting time, not much later, when WWFA broke the news to them that they’re being provided with a water well. The Kandeu villagers erupted into celebration! They couldn’t believe that their lives were going to improve drastically. From sickness to health, poverty to prosperity! They exclaimed that they will now be so much more productive in their day-to-day lives.
So, WWFA drilled the borehole in the village in February and the process is underway to lay the foundation and finish the construction of the water well. Once the water well is installed, it will benefit over 80 households in the village!
Isn’t this a great thing to be part of?!
Now that you’re reminded of why we do what we do – with your help – I’m happy to tell you that so far this year, we’ve already installed 14 water wells. Six of them are on school properties and 8 are in hard-to-reach, rural villages.
As you think about the ladies of Kandeu, I hope you’ll recommit to helping us give the gift of water – of life – to many more women in rural Africa!
Thank you for continuing to relieve them of this hardship, and give them and their families safe water to drink. I am grateful for your ongoing partnership in this good work.
