End of the year progress - thanks to all support

By Cahyo Kurniawan | FMPL Project Manager

Dear donors and supporters,

Happy New Year! lets get 2025 the year of changes with waste management!

2024 was hard with waste management as Gili Trawangan has been so busy. The more tourists the more rubbish.

The dump was on fire few times and we felt that nobody would notice the danger of it and what was needed for FMPL and Gili Eco Trust to move forward.

We have posted that we needed an excavator to manage the daily rubbish and the dump / land fill, but we were never getting enough for the purchase of one.

So we ask for help locally and on social media, the response has been amazing. Thanks to all of you and all the individuals and  businesses on Gili Trawangan for their donations.

We have reach a total of US$30,000 and we bought an excavator and transported it to the island, we used it straight away on the land fill where smoke was still visible and to arrange the rubbish hill with access road for the daily rubbish intake.

It is also very useful to clear the sorting center of rubbish so we can deal with sorting recyclables and making compost without going all around the building.

Meanwhile, our call for help has motivated the government to do something for Gili Trawangan waste management and some huge machines have started to come and get installed in the sorting center. We will know soon everything about these machines and how they work. We know that one machine is not the solution and that we need to employ another 20 people to sort daily waste but it is nice to see that the government is helping us!

Thanks again for your support

Best Wishes
