Support Our Glass Recycling Revolution!

Dear Gili Lovers,

We're buzzing with excitement to start 2024 as we gear up for a groundbreaking transformation on our beloved island.

It’s been a long while (almost 3 years!) since our humble glass-cutting and upcycled glass workshop has been closed thanks to the 2020 pandemic. Now we are actively working in the TPST (the government’s half-finished waste integration centre) we're on the brink of something big, and we need your help to make it happen.

Our new workshop is in progress, finally, with a roof over our heads (literally!). Now, we're ready to kick things up by getting our hands on the latest equipment and tools. That's where you come in. We're on a mission to upgrade our glass recycling factory and take our upcycled glassware game to new heights.

We’ve created a proposal (and a list with some photos below) of the tools we need to get this project up and running again. Some of them (such as the Bosch power drill & grinders) will be one-off purchases, others (such as replacement blades and protective gear for our glass artists) we will be purchasing frequently as they get worn out.

Why does it matter?
Picture this: Gili T, an island of revelry, parties, and plenty of glass bottle waste left behind. The glass expans the dump so fast and is a major fire hazard when in the direct sun coupled with gas emissions from the dump.

Our glass brick factory, funded by the money that the FMPL creates from selling waste in Lombok, has been a beacon of sustainability, turning this discarded glass into something beautiful and useful – building materials for eco-conscious developments and resorts.

Now, we're reaching out to you for a little help. We have big plans to open the glass-cutting workshop in the next few months. We certainly have enough glass bottles being consumed for it, so now is the time to upcycle and turn this trash into treasures!

Gili T's Trash Centre is on it's way!

Greetings, supporters of the FMPL's Gili T Waste Project! We're thrilled to bring you an exciting update on the progress we've made at the dump, and the significant strides we're taking toward a cleaner, more sustainable future for Gili T.

The TPST Transformation Begins:

In the heart of our efforts lies the TPST (Trash Processing and Sorting Terminal or tempat pengolahan sampah terpadu), a groundbreaking integrated waste recycling, processing, and management facility. While we eagerly await the final signature on the MOU, a milestone that has been nearly two years in the making, we've been granted permission to initiate modifications on the TPST.

These modifications include the demolition of certain structural barriers to facilitate the smooth flow of waste through conveyor belts. However, the cost of servicing and repairing the equipment, which has been dormant for several years, falls on us. Despite the financial commitment, we see these necessary investments as crucial steps toward realizing our vision of a greener Gili T.

Glass Cutting Workshop Expansion:

Over the past year, we've successfully operated our glass waste project from the TPST. Now, we're on the verge of reviving and expanding our glass-cutting workshop on a larger scale. The workshop construction is underway, featuring sealed rooms to address concerns about glass shards and abrasive sand in the air.

We're proud to collaborate with The SeaCleaners, a fantastic partner offering both financial support and invaluable expertise. Together, we're making strides towards a more sustainable future, one glass bottle at a time.

Waste Sorting and Recycling Goals:

Our ultimate goal is to educate the entire island on effective waste sorting, with a focus on separating organic and inorganic waste. Inorganic waste will be processed inside the TPST, while organic waste will be hand-sorted and composted in a large-scale facility dedicated to managing all food and garden waste on Gili T.

Presently, the waste breakdown stands at 60% organic, 10% recyclable, 10% glass, and 20% residue. To enhance our impact, we plan to hire additional staff. This team will be responsible for daily collection of plastic bags from the dump and surrounding areas, as well as the separation and compaction of plastic bags into large bales.

The Trash FMPL Project is not just about waste management; it's a community-driven initiative aimed at transforming our island into a beacon of sustainability.
