Well we were going along fine after the disruption of covid and just getting into our stride again with Activities that had to be suspended when........Cylone Freddy landed on us in March.! The month of March is coming to tjhe end of the Rainy season and the crops are almost ready for harvesting. This really is a disaster for our staff and volunteers as the people of this community are totally dependent on their harvest to get them through the year.
Forunately both the Project centre survived as did the Library as both are built on higher ground. However one of our new sub libraries was damaged and the books destroyed. Worse than that is the fact that most people in the area have lost their means of survival for the next year and several had their homes destroyed. One of our best volunteers had his leg amputated a few weeks before the cyclone and now the poor mans house has also been knocked down.!
It seems that little help has come so far...the scale of the disaster is too big as its not only our district of Phalombe which has sufferred but several other districts including the city of Blantyre. Our hope is that the resilience of a people who have survived droughts, floods and diseases before will once again rise and survive somehow.
Likulezi is too small a Project to be of much help...it is too overwhelming for us who manag on a tight budget and only survive ourselves from year to year. But its the people themselves who are resilient and positive and who hopefully will come through. Some Project activities have proceeded notwithstanding with the Library open and busy. Some of our Groups whose offices have been destroyed will be busy rebuilding when the time is right and food assistance comes in. We will live in HOPE.
