Emergency Aid for Afghan Families

Recently AIL staff traveled from the head office out to Daikundi Province. This is one of the most deprived areas and lacks facilities. It is a 24 hour walk from Kabul and many of the roads are difficult for vehicles to pass.  The people are very poor but eager to learn and improve their lives. AIL provided a series of teacher training seminars, workshops and delivered food aid.  The food aid went to 200 of the poorest families. The packages included rice, oil, tea, cucumbers, beans. Families also received shampoo and soap and winter clothing.

Staff met one lady called Ruby who said,” I live in Sukhtuk village, Nili city, Daikundi province. My husband died and I have five children. I am illiterate and my only property is ten chickens. It is a hard life in this corner of the city and in the heart of the Neel Mountains. Every moment my children and I die and come back to life. Some nights my eldest son goes to sleep hungry so that his sister and I can have his bread. As a mother, I cry a lot even when I sleep.” 

Food aid makes a huge difference to women like Ruby, who struggle every day to makes ends meet.

There is ongoing need for food aid for poor Afghan families. Many families’ main income is from day laboring. The worker seeks a job for that day which enables him to buy food that evening for the family.

This is a precarious existence which is adversely affected by local economic downturn, bad weather may halt construction jobs that day, excess workers mean there is not enough work for all who need it, ill health can prevent the worker seeking a job. All these events will mean no food for the family that evening. Families come to AIL for food supplies that they can cook at home. This provides a safety net for the family. AIL usually supplies about 200 families with food packs that can include: rice, beans, cooking oil, sugar, tea and bread.
