“I wouldn’t encourage any parent to give up their child…Once you traffic them, you kill the child’s spirit and they suffer, like I suffered.”
Ami has had time to reflect on her past experience as a victim of trafficking (VoT). At the age of 25, she has grown older and wise beyond her years. She has also developed a passion for teaching.
Currently, Ami works as an instructor at a primary school, teaching subjects such as science, creative arts, religious studies, and information and communications technology. In the future, she hopes to earn a B.A. in Social Studies from the University of Winneba.
Thinking back on her time as a domestic servant at Kete Krachi, Ami recalled missing out on the warmth of loved ones. “Love and affection is what you don’t have when you are trafficked. You feel alone and poor and that you are nothing."
Rescued by IOM in 2008 at the age of 13, Ami received love and affection for the first time in three years at a government rescue centre in Accra. The love there sowed a seed of confidence within her, one that helped her to develop into the gentle, free-spirited, and responsible woman that she is today. It is this same confidence that she says helped to prop her up during the reintegration process, keeping her spirits up even during tough times. In fact, one day she hopes to get involved in helping VoTs, just like her.
As always, IOM would like to thank you for your generous support, which assists people like Ami during the rescue, rehabilitation and reintegration process.
