Several years ago, Awuku’s mother received an offer from a fisherman: give up Awuku for labour in exchange for financial assistance and a promise that her son would be educated and treated well. Struggling to care for all her children, she accepted.
Awuku, however, was not educated or treated well. Instead, he was exploited for a year and a half on Lake Volta. Through the assistance of Awuku’s mother, IOM rescued her son and coordinated his recovery and reintegration.
Having been away for an extended period and no longer able to study with his peers, Awuku has struggled at times to readjust to school. His passion for music, however, gives him hope and inspires him to persevere. In his spare time, you can find Awuku singing and dancing to gospel music.
Through your kind donations, Awuku and other rescued children are charting a path to a better future through the education and skills they are acquiring.
