Education.....the community cares

Romania Animal Rescue's education program reaches new heights. With our booklets, our spay/neuter campaigns, and Homeless Animals Hospital program, communities are becoming responsive and compassionate to the plight of the animals. I would like to share a couple of stories sent to us (one from the local newspaper in Vatra Dornei) from our friends in Romania. I hope you enjoy reading how your donations have helped so many animals!

From: http://www.newsbucovina.ro/social/115876/peste-500-de-caini-si-pisici-sterilizati-gratuit-in-acest-an-la-vatra-dornei

"The number of the strays roaming on the streets of Vatra Dornei has considerably decreased as a result of massive free spay / neuter campaigns carried out with the help of foreign partners. The positive result of the spay / neuter campaigns is not only the small number of strays, but also consists in changing people's mentalities regarding their pets.

The last free spay / neuter campaign in Vatra Dornei was successfully finalized, on November 21st and 22nd being s/n 23 dogs and 29 cats.

With the help and support of Romania Animal Rescue's project, in 2014, there were spayed / neutered 515 animals - 372 dogs and 143 cats.

Also, the outcome of RAR project in Vatra Dornei is a great one regarding the total number of the animals that were fixed starting with June 2013 - 669 animals were fixed after Romania Animal Rescue's nine campaigns - 526 dogs and 143 cats.

According to Roxana Pasat, one of the coordinators of Vatra Dornei's campaigns, the spay / neuter procedures were performed with the exclusive support of foreign donors, amazing people who have understood the importance and the need for such projects in Romania, people who donated on a monthly basis for Vatra Dornei local projects. Roxana Pasat also states that local people must join these efforts, respond and get involved in order to solve the situation of the street animals.

"All this hard work is reflected in our daily reality and it is by all means reflected by the fact that there are less and less dogs roaming on the streets of our town. This is the reason why these campaigns need not stop. We wish to have them on a permanent schedule for the benefit of our entire community, we wish that the foreign donors not to forget about us, and we would be extremely happy that Romanian citizens to be more responsible and to understand that, without the immense support of donations, nothing is done or solved by itself".

The success of all these spay / neuter campaigns from Vatra Dornei was ensured by a professional team of vets and volunteers. The Dream Team members are: dr. Aurelian Stefan, dr. Petrisor Stefan, dr. Irina Corbu, dr. Livioara Rotariu, vet tech Ruth Osborne, vet tech Anda Popescu and Lelia Leandra. Numerous young volunteers and the Team of the Mountain Rescuers - Echipa Salvamont Vatra Dornei - came to help the Dream Team's and joined forces with them.

Mr. Ilie Bonches, Mayor of Vatra Dornei, got involved and was always happy to offer the adequate premises for carrying out of the activities and to pay for the food and lodging of the Team's members.

"Together we succeeded to change people's mentalities a bit, we managed to convince part of the town's population that the only source of the strays is the private household, the yards of those who do not spay / neuter their own dogs, the same ones who abandon pups on the streets", Roxana Pasat also stated."

And from our extraordinary veterinary techinician, Ruth Osborne, this observation:

"It is December 4th and today we celebrate RAR's Educational Program. Every spay campaign is an opportunity to talk to people about how to keep their pets healthy and happy. We also find that people talk to each other and share stories about pets we operated previously and how great they are doing now. Word quickly spreads in towns where we can return regularly. Simple communication saves lives.

The other side to the educational campaign is talking to young people as these are the responsible pet owners of the future. Your donations allow the printing of books on animal welfare to help teach the next generation responsibility towards animals. Thankyou for making this possible!"

We thank you all who have donated to help with our massive programs for free spay/neuter (now approaching 33,000 free surgeries), Homeless Animals Hospital program, Veterinary Training Camp, and Education. All these projects go hand in hand together, resulting in animal welfare in Romania. Our friend, Oliviu from Speranta charity in Craiova stated: "People are enthusiastic about the RAR campaigns. Via these campaigns, animal lovers have met one another, and united to reach out to the community of Craiova and help thousands of animals. We thank our lucky stars for Romania Animal Rescue's work"

I wish you all a very Happy Holiday season, and ask that you continue to support our work in Romania with a donation for education. Thank you!
