REPORT ON THE SANITATION CHALLENGE AT MWANYAGIRI COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL

1. Background

Mwanyagiri Community Primary School is facing a serious sanitation challenge due to the deteriorating condition of its existing pit latrine. The facility, which has served the school community for approximately 40 years, is now full and overflowing, making it unsuitable and unsafe for continued use.

The school serves more than 500 pupils who depend on this facility for their daily sanitation needs. With the latrine reaching full capacity, the school faces an urgent need for a safe, hygienic, and reliable sanitation solution.

2. Description of the Problem

The existing pit latrine has reached its maximum capacity, and waste is overflowing, creating an unhygienic environment within the school. This situation raises serious concerns about the health, safety, and dignity of pupils, as well as the overall cleanliness of the school environment.

Exposure to overflowing human waste increases the risk of sanitation-related illnesses and contamination of the surrounding environment. Children may also experience discomfort, embarrassment, and difficulty accessing safe sanitation facilities during school hours.

The situation is particularly concerning for girls, younger children, and pupils with disabilities, who may require safe, accessible, and private sanitation facilities.

3. Impact on Pupils and the School Community

The sanitation challenge threatens the well-being and learning experience of more than 500 pupils. Poor sanitation can contribute to the spread of diseases, increased absenteeism, and reduced concentration in class. It also places additional pressure on teachers and school administrators to protect children in an environment where basic sanitation needs are not adequately met.

Without urgent intervention, the continued use of an overflowing latrine could further worsen the school's sanitation conditions and expose pupils to avoidable health risks.

4. Proposed Solution

To address this challenge, F SSIBU Mission Foundation – Uganda is seeking support to construct a new, safe, and hygienic toilet facility at Mwanyagiri Community Primary School.

The proposed intervention will aim to provide adequate sanitation facilities for the school's more than 500 pupils, improve hygiene standards, and promote a healthier learning environment.

Additional support will be needed for handwashing facilities, clean water where available, soap, detergents, and other essential sanitation materials. Proper maintenance and responsible use of the new facility will also be encouraged to ensure its long-term sustainability.

5. Expected Long-Term Impact

Constructing a new toilet facility will help improve sanitation, protect children's dignity, and reduce their exposure to health risks associated with poor waste management. It will also support school attendance, create a more comfortable learning environment, and strengthen the school's capacity to promote good hygiene practices.

6. Conclusion and Call for Support

The overflowing latrine at Mwanyagiri Community Primary School is an urgent sanitation concern that requires collective action. More than 500 pupils deserve access to safe and hygienic sanitation facilities that protect their health and dignity.
