The first round of judging for the 13th Bulgarian Creative Writing Competition was organized off-line from 11th till 17th of January. 58 Judges with expertise in different spheres but united by their love for reading and writing selected the best 18 works in each age category. They were busy exploring the fictional worlds created by the participants and dived deep into the magic of the students’ imagination! The judges gasped, cried and laughed while reading about ostrich feathers, tech-savvy grandmas, mysterious messages, life hackers, solitary dances, dangerous metaphors and far away universes.
After a careful and truly challenging grading, the judges selected the 126 national qualifiers, who advanced to the national round of judging on January 20th – 22nd. This year’s wining works all shared vivid imagination, love for words, curiosity and fearlessness. The awarded students transported us to their inner worlds and gave us hope for the future using their unique voices. Their confidence was contagious and we wanted their stories to never end. As always, it was a real pleasure and a true inspiration to be a part of their imaginary worlds. Some of our judges shared how they felt about the experience:
Wow, truly incredible! One of them actually moved me to tears. I feel so grateful to have this opportunity, so thank you! – J. Weinshenker
I do have an absolute favorite and it is the best I have ever read in this competition! Thank you for inviting me to participate again! It is always very inspiring! – N. Zaharieva
This piece was outstanding! It is a good hypothetical construct with existential implications. The author challenges us to consider and possibly re-evaluate the fundamental scaffolding of every human life. – I. Ivanov
Very intimate piece of writing, very honest, multilayered emotional read! The details are the plot! And although it might be perceived as an excerpt from a book chapter, the story has a very intelligent gradation and a delicate twist! – G. Paraskova
On February 11th, 2023 in Toplocentrala Centre for Contemporary Arts we celebrated the creativity and perseverance of this year’s winners! All attendees relished the opportunity to meet other young writers and exchange ideas and inspiration.
We were honored to share the special occasion with representatives of the US Embassy, and the publishing houses Klett and Express. Their support over the years is invaluable. A few members of the national jury also attended the ceremony and congratulated the winners for their success.
During the award ceremony the guests had the chance to experience playback theater by Storycatchers and observe their personal stories develop into an art performance! Students from the 91st German Language High School “Prof. Konstantin Galabov” entertained the audience with musical performances.
As we had such talented writers this year, we gave out special awards from American University in Bulgaria, from Cynthia Phoel, who is a writer and former Peace Corps volunteer in Bulgaria and a special award in honor of Tim Steflik, who was also a Peace Corps volunteer in Bulgaria
