In the heart of the Sundarbans, East Khejuria, a small settlement in Dhangmari village, struggles with a persistent problem — the lack of reliable electricity. Nestled beside the scenic Dhangmari canal, this remote area is home to families who face darkness every night, especially affecting children's education and overall quality of life.
Despite their resilience, the community’s economic challenges make it difficult to afford alternative sources of power. "My son can't study properly after sunset," a local community says. "We use kerosene lamps sometimes, but it's not enough and not safe either." Due to use of kerosene the environment is also degraded.
With no consistent access to the national power grid, solar energy has emerged as a sustainable and practical solution for the people of East Khejuria. The discontinuation of electricity is very common and it hampers the regular activity of the community people. Illegal activities at night has been increased due the improper electricity
As part of a local green energy initiative, several families have recently received solar lights—offering a glimmer of hope and a cleaner, safer alternative to traditional lighting. Since 2015 Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) is working with solar energy. Earlier more than 3000 solar lamp was distributed by BEDS in the Sundarbans area to mitigate the darkness of the community. In the continuation of this BEDS want to distribute the solar lamp to the community of East Khejuria village.
"Solar lights can mitigate the darkness and will be a great hope to the local people—they are lighting up futures," says Mr. Shamsur Rahman, local NGO worker involved in the project. "Children will study at night, and families no longer have to rely on polluting and costly fuel-based lights."
This initiative also aligns with broader goals to reduce carbon emissions and protect the fragile Sundarbans ecosystem. Community members hope that with continued support and expansion of solar energy programs, more villages in the region can benefit from clean, green electricity.
As East Khejuria begins to see the light, both literally and metaphorically, it serves as a shining example of how small steps in sustainable energy can make a big difference in rural lives. As BEDS is trying to implement the ecovillage concept in small scale but near future we want to implement this idea in large scale.
