Tailoring brings smiles to the coastal women

Coastal women are earning by tailoring

Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) has been trying to improve the socio-economic condition of the women of Mathurapur village (Munshijang union of Shyamnagar sub district of Satkhira district) by providing several training like tailoring training.

Impact:

30 women got training on tailoring and they are engaged in tailoring. They are making dresses, bags and masks. Their family income has increased and their social condition has also been improved. Now they have a respectful position in their family as well as among the villagers.

Feedbacks from the beneficiaries:

One of beneficiary expresses her felling. ‘‘I live in Mathurapur village with my family. There are 7 members in our family. I have one younger brother and 4 sisters. My father collects honey and catches fishes from Sundarbans. But due to Covid-19, his income has been decreased. Now it is impossible for him to fulfill the basic needs of seven people. Sometimes, we were starving in hunger. Schools, colleges are closed in this covid pandemic and I focused on tailoring to support my family. I made lots of masks, bags and dresses. I am contributing my family income. year I have earned around BDT 22000 Tk by tailoring dress, mask and bags. Now we can have our meals properly. We are living a happy life. Now I can see the smiling faces of my siblings. I want to be a good tailor and also want that other women of our village get the training so that they can lead a happy life.’’

Capacity building training and sewing equipments are necessary for the women to improve their life standard. So, BEDS has taken an initiative to empower 50 women of Mathurapur village by developing their skill on sewing and also providing them equipments related to sewing through raising fund from GlobalGiving platform.

So, it’s a heartiest appeal to all the donors for being kind to help those vulnerable women to give them a chance to have an alternate employment opportunity and lead a better life.

Tailoring has change the life of coastal women

Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) has been trying to improve the life standard of the women of Mathurapur village (Munshijang union of Shyamnagar sub district of Satkhira district) by providing tailoring training. BEDS has motivated local women of Mathurapur village to conduct small cottage industry to improve their life standard and provided training 30 women on cutting cloths and tailoring them.

Impact:

I got training on tailoring from BEDS. After that I am making dress, bag, mask and selling them. I also take order from local people and shops. In 2021, I have earned around BDT 20,000 from tailoring. Now I can take care of my children as well as my family members. I am contributing to my family income and this brings solvency in my family income. Now my family members are also considering my opinion regarding any topic and I gain a respectful position in my family.

One of beneficiary expresses her felling. ‘‘I struggled a lot to earn our livelihood. I risked my life and collect shrimp fry, fuel wood. I had no such respect and position in my family. I had to work hard from dawn to desk. After getting the training of tailoring and sewing machine, my life has been changed. Now I am earning money at my home. I can take proper care of my little children and can also bring food for them. I am contributing to my family expenses. Now my family seeks my decision for any work. I got a respect from not only my family members but also from the villagers. I want to improve my sewing capacity more to become a successful tailor and help my family.’’

Help coastal women to lead a safe life

Coastal women are earning from tailoring

Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) has been working to improve the life standard and to create safe livelihood scope for the coastal community since 2015.

The people of Mathurapur village live below the poverty line and are the victim of natural disasters. Every year, cyclones visit in this area. This is a highly saline area which creates several health issues for everyone specially women and child. They could not take some protective measures due to their poverty. It is very difficult for them to conduct perform agricultural activities due to high salinity and disasters. They use to earn money by harvesting Sundarbans resources. Women of this village risk their life to go to Sundarbans to collect shrimp fry and fuel wood.

BEDS has been working to create alternate income generating activities to improve their life standardby homestead vegetable gardening, duck and ram raring, tailoring etc. BEDS provided training to the coastal women and now they are earning their livelihood without any life risk by tailoring. They said, “Before we used to go Sundarbans to collect fuel wood and shrimp fry. Sometimes, we got injured by this activities. Now we do not go to the forest and earn their livelihood by tailoring. They are contributing in their family income”.

Only few women are earning money through tailoring. There is many women who want to learn tailoring to come out the cycle of poverty.
