In November 2025, in recognition of the International Day of Care and Support, the International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care (IAHPC), in collaboration with representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO) Department of Mental Health and Healthy Ageing, organized a free webinar on Palliative Care for Persons with Dementia. The purpose of the webinar was to introduce the WHO caregiver support tools—particularly the iSupport program—to the global palliative care community. The session was recorded and is available at no cost as an educational resource for professionals and caregivers supporting individuals living with dementia.
The IAHPC webinar was designed for clinical practitioners—especially those working in palliative care and mental health—as well as formal and informal caregivers, nursing home administrators, WHO country and regional offices, media representatives, and members of the public interested in evidence-based approaches to dementia care and palliative care integration.
Anyone with internet access can view the webinar recording in this page. Participants in the live session, as well as those who watch the recording, gain insights into:
The global framework that commits Member States to provide palliative care for older persons, including those living with dementia, supporting advocacy efforts with national governments
Practical guidance on how to use the WHO iSupport tools for family caregivers of people with dementia
The Compassionate Communities movement and its relevance to dementia and palliative care
How family caregivers can recognize and respond to the palliative care needs of their loved ones living with dementia
The webinar also features strategies and personal reflections to support caregivers in providing compassionate, culturally appropriate, and practical dementia care across countries and settings of all resource levels.
iSupport is a self-help skills and training program developed by WHO for caregivers of people living with dementia. It aims to reduce caregiver stress, strengthen knowledge, and improve quality of life, while supporting caregivers in delivering more effective and compassionate care. The program is available online at www.isupportfordementia.org and as a downloadable PDF manual, ensuring access in settings with limited internet connectivity. iSupport includes five core modules—Introduction to Dementia; Being a Caregiver; Caring for Me; Providing Everyday Care; and Dealing with Behavior Changes—and features concise readings, practical examples, and interactive exercises with immediate feedback.
