Save Abandoned Cows from painful death in Gujarat.

Despite the dire strait of Covid-19 second wave, our team and volunteer rescuers continued providing their service to all abandoned, diseased, injured, and traumatized cows. Last month we received 10 such cases of abandoned cows in our facility who were suffering from dehydration, weakness, maggot wound, broken limbs due to road accidents, eye injury, horn injury, etc.

Though our facility does not have the luxury of space or manpower, our team worked hard to lessen their pain and misery. The good news is they are all either recovered and re-homed or on the way to recovery. As it says, ‘When there is a will, there is a way.’

Uterine Prolapse can be a real frustration for cattle, it occurs most commonly in heavily pregnant cows due to many reasons like- After caving, Calcium Phosphorus Deficiency, hormonal imbalance, etc. They are associated with increased pressure in the lower abdomen cavity. Uterine prolapse is an emergency, and the cow must be treated quickly. Treating and repositioning prolapsed regions is a high priority to prevent inflammation and infections.

A few days back we have received a report on our helpline about an abandoned dairy cow who had a large prolapse. She was rescued and transported to our hospital by Four Leg foundation Ahmedabad, where we named her “Gopi”.

Gopi’s prolapse was already inflamed so she was given the consecutive treatment of ice pack and sugar coat to reduce the swelling for three days, after that the prolapsed mass was pushed back inside. It sounds easy enough but it was a joint effort of 5 people.  

Gopi’s prolapse has not recurred in the last 24 hours, but she is under constant supervision and is receiving a high dose of medication good diet, an anti-biotic to prevent further infection. “Gopi” is feeling much better now, very soon she will be released to her natural habitat.
