During the past month, continuous downpouring rain has created floods which destroyed roads and flooded homes and shops, making it difficult for people to live their normal lives. Peer Educators with The Virtues Project worked tirelessly to assist people in these difficult conditions. Even though they faced difficulties communicating with each other and reaching their community sites due to the floods, some brave hearts helped out by moving members of the affected communities to evacuation centers and making sure vehicles were kept safe from floodwaters.
Peer Educators teach the Five Strategies during Easter
During the long Easter weekend, a number of youth workshops took place in the Lautoka region. During one workshop, a total of 60 Virtues Peer Educators (40 girls and 20 boys) ranging in age from 16 to 25, were in attendance. That evening, nearly 400 youth attended a training session in which the Peer Educators shared lessons about The Five Strategies of the Virtues Project.
Partnering for truth and reconciliation
Another Lautoka-area youth forum was held in which elders from the Methodist Church joined with other stakeholders to discuss the topic of truth and reconciliation. Fiji’s Minister for Youth was one of the chief guests during this event, in which Virtues-trained youth gave a presentation on ways in which The Five Strategies align with truth and reconciliation.A total of 400 youth participated in the event and gave feedback expressing their interest in receiving additional training.
Discussing HIV & AIDS in Ra
In the neighbouring province of Ra, another group of nearly 30 youth attended a 2-day workshop held by Peer Educators. The event was focused on addressing social issues affecting Fiji’s youth, particularly HIV & AIDS, as national statistics for these diseases have increased alarmingly.
